I was amazed to learn Joe Frazier fought basically blind during the last few rounds of the Thrilla in Manila. From what I recall Joe was fighting with an injury to one eye that he kept quiet and Ali closed his other eye in the fight, leaving him very close to blind.

Joe fought his entire pro career with partial vision. He suffered a left eye injury in sparring and later developed cataracts which left him blind in his left eye.

Its an all too common occurrence. Cataracts usually form in older people or people who have had torn or detached retinas repaired. If a torn or detached retina isnt repaired in time the person will lose all vision in that eye.

Cataracts dont make you blind as such, they are like looking through a lightly frosted window. The crystalline lens of the eye goes opaque and everything is darker and blurry.

Greb had a detached retina that never got repaired, went completely blind in that eye yet still won most of his fights against hall of fame calibre opponents. Amazing.
