Seems every fighter they have brought through the ranks from turning over has failed like Ortiz and Jacobs along with other stars they have hyped up falling short like Linares and Juarez. In fact I can't remember a Goldenboy fighter that has won 3 major fights in a row while signed with them. Hopkins, De La Hoya, Mosley, Barerra, Marquez, Guzman and Casamayor all lost major fights under GBP
so? surely this should be a good thing? it shows they dont just protect boxers and keep ridiculous unbeaten records ala JC. it might prove that they are willing to get more competitive match-ups which is good for the sport and in the long run hopefully the importance of an unbeaten record will become less although i think amir khan is certainly looking to be protected
No such thing as a curse. Goldenboy tend to pick guys up and match them tough to see how far they can go. Better to find out early than late.
yeah when Linares just signed with GB, he got sparked out in 73 secs. They do have some curse lingerring on them..
I don't really rate Golden Boy when it comes to their promotion and building stars but they are far better than Top Rank for taking risks.
Khan was already a world titlist when they got him. And I don't believe they're protecting him for a minute. They want a Marquez fight as much for Marquez's sake (and the purse that would go with it). Since they picked him up they put him right in with Malignaggi - not an easy night's work for any fighter usually. Also, we don't know for definite who he's fighting next. And Marquez is still good enough to knock the **** out of Khan.
I would've advised GBP from signing Linares anyway, he's never impressed me too much, surprised he dropped Rocky last night though, Jorge has little pop and Juarez is as durable as they come. I really liked Pirog, but his small shifts in movement and changing of tempo really impressed me. I knew Jacobs had no power, but he really didn't offer much in the way of educated lateral movement or handspeed, I was really let down by him. Pirog always looked like he would go on to win, despite the scorecards at the time of the stoppage. A curse? No. Just seems GBP has got their hands on/perpetuated some hyped fighters that have shown little in the way of real fighting substance (so far, a loss means little in the grand scheme of things) and Ortiz for example has got a decent scalp despite being battered in the last year.
Jacobs and Mares are the only golden boy fighters that have been there since turning and fought for world titles. Mares drew, jacobs got KOd by a guy who looks quality. Ortiz started at top rank but anyway his only loss was to a guy who hits hard as hell. Hardly a curse. At least GBP give their prospects tough fights
I'd much rather see it. JMM is the man at 135 and Katsidis is the no.2. It would no doubt be exciting, and as Katsidis whacks harder than Diaz there's always the chances he'll force Marquez's ever ageing legs to go out. I don't wanna see Marquez fed to Khan, Amir will win a boring decision and Marquez's name will essentially be getting used to make Khan more marketable. JMM Vs Katsidis should happen. Hopefully im right and Khan continues to be protected (or fights someone his own size) and we get to see this instead, the best fight at 135lbs.
