GPater great choice, billy Graham had the perfect style for a newcomer to study from.I saw him many times-Perfect boxer fromth outside, and GREAT infighter with an iron chin.. I visualize old Jack Britton had a similiar style, although Britton had 3 times as mnany fights as Graham...
Gilberto Roman would be worth a look as well.Not a great physical talent, but a top-notch textbook stylist.
Hagler, Hopkins and Curry don't have great footwork IMO. I would have anyone study Leonard and Ali, not for their reflexes which no one can really hope to copy, but for their footwork. Even if you have 50% of Ali's footwork, that's more than most champion fighters and ATGs bother attempting. Tunney is a good example of someone without freakish talent managing to achieve a lot because of great all-round fundamentals, he had good footwork.
Curry didn't move his head much, kept his chin up, was too stationary on his feet, and backed up in a straight line. Almost a perfect fighter between the neck and the waist though.
Hopkins had great footwork in his prime. Always balanced, always exactly placed. His footwork was his best weapon in his prime, next to his brain, IMO.
Depending on what natural abilities a fledgling young fight has been endowed with, I believe that he should be taught the sound fundamentals of boxing with an accent on the defensive side of the manly art. Another good example might be Yuri Foreman.
Great thread! Would Duran be a good guy to watch for a beginner? For southpaws, maybe Hagler? Hagler did have a great chin and power but mostly relied on fundamentals and skills to take his man down. Its slightly harder to pick a good guy to try and emulate for a southpaw IMO.
Harold johnson would be the perfect example of a style in which to emulate. He was the archetypical technician/perfectionist.
