Damned good fighter. Probably underrated because he came along at the time of Arguello and was second best in that matchup. Classic case of a guy who rose to the occasion as a champion, who was made better by winning the title: he was 2-2-1 in his last five fights before winning the super feather crown and then defended it like 10 times before running into Arguello. A few pretty good scalps in his trophy case. A very, very, very good fighter, but probably not quite a great one.
My brothers and I always looked forward to seeing his title defenses on the old WWS. That he was a clear lesser light then Arguello shouldn't diminish the good run as champion he had.
He had a real herky-jerky style, very fluid but in an awkward way with lots of moving parts. Like a man on the street trying to imitate what he thought a boxer moved like or something. Still, he made the most of the opportunity and became a very good fighter and as courageous a battler as you'd want.
A tv favorite of mine back in the 70's...he was entertaining and courageous....a very exciting fighter.
