does anyone have difficulty with this particular punch?
my straight punches are devastating but still can't throw powerful hooks after years of experience - very frustrating
what really baffles me is when i see the pros on tv bring their arms out wide and manage to whip their hands round at such high speed(like a swing) when i try that it feels like my arms r gonna fall out of my sockets

i cant for the life of me throw a decent screw shot.

i find it hard landing uppercuts,im great on the pads with them and can generate alot of power,a whole different story against a person though.

Make sure you have your body behind the hook. Pivot your lead foot and just before impact, shift a bit of your weight to your rear foot.

but i have been doing pad work with a trainer who used to do pads with me when i first started boxing and i havent done skills with him in ages. He has got me throwing powerful hooks now as he loves power shots

i find hook very natural for me to throw, with lots of power. Straight punches pretty good, but uppercuts not so much power..

what i have noticed is for some reason i can throw a fairly hard hook if it's the angled type (half hook half uppercut) but my pure hooks r abysmal
i think the bit i've left out is shifting weight to the rear foot

i used to love the hook even though i was never a big hitter.hook off the jab or double hook(body-head).i know what you mean with the hook/uppercut too.best looking punch there is.
do you have a tendency to lean back when hooking on the pads ?

yes i do that could be why i'm not shifting the weight, but with the uppercut hook you throw it differently

eventhough im not experienced, i tend to see a little pattern regarding a fighters build, and their best/hardest punches.. off course this isnt a rule, but just something i noticed at my gym.!

in the gym, i see those quite thin guys and whom are tall and their straight shots are awesome. when they get their timing and extension right, ouch mann
but ive noticed, that when they throw a hook, that some of them cant really get power into those shots.

now take me, and a couple of others, who are build more compact, our hooks, are more powerfull and with better technique.

again, im no expert, but when i get the feeling, that this hook was really good, i have an extremely fast upperbody rotation. You could try, to throw a straight right and left hook, while your using a heavy bag. that should give you a some rotation, when your coming back from the straight right. before you know, you got the left hook in place, with and without the straigh right.

i dont agree with your theory, im a tall thin fighter, my straight punches have not bad power, but my hooks are becoming lethal. Its all about whippin the hook and bending your knuckles over and proper technique. Maybe its the way my coach taught me how to throw it.

i agree , i was tall for my weight and had a good left jab but my straight right was crap.i liked hooking of the jab and my uppercut was pretty good but sometimes didn't bend my knuckles enough so my thumb hit first.

One of the things about the hook is that you want the rest of your body to go first and let the hook swing by afterwords. that puts the extra "whip" in it.

An easy way to accomplish this is to imagine that you have no left arm... just a shoulder. Then throw the punch by pivoting on the front foot which will rotate the hips, which will then rotate the upper body, which will bring the shoulder around. If you have your eyes on the target, the arm and fist will whip to that spot all by itself.

But the thing to practice here is to throw the shoulder instead of the whole arm. That way, the arm will be loose and relaxed and will connect with major impact. Also, you will tend not to telegraph it this way and the punch usually becomes tighter and shorter.

lol me neither. i think the main thing w/ me is that i try to do the hook from too far away. if ur too far away, it makes it VERY difficult to land w/ ur knuckles. try to just get real close and work from there

this is true, thats how you should throw a left hook (orthodox). You just need to learn how to roll the knucles or it becomes a slap
