When throwing a left hook for example, should my left arm draw back slightly before throwing it? By this, I mean that when I throw my left hook, my left hand and arm slightly moves back as I create the arch to deliver the punch. Is this something that is proper technique, or a bad habit?

it's not about the arm, its about hips and the type of punch. If you want to throw the hardest hook you can, you got to move your hips in opposite direction first, and then turn back like a spring towards the target. Your hand should always follow that motion, so the hand also goes back a little bit. If you throw a jab, it is mostly a shoulder punch, so there is no such hip twisting. And of course, legs should also follow that movement.

Once the punch is loaded by body rotation there should be no need to bring the punching hand back any further than where it is, by doing this you are telegraphing the punch and adding more movement that is not required. The punch should start at exactly the same time as the body rotates and should land as the rear heel hits the floor. Whilst the hook is one of boxings more complex punches it should still be executed with only the necessary amount of movement with a view to maintaining balance even if the punch misses and the ability to throw a follow up punch or make a defensive movement.

I throw a straight arm out to my side, then I bend my elbow while I bring it in to deliver my punch.
The straight arm confuses people, and makes them look. The late bent elbow movement makes it difficult to block the punch. It is more of a swinging circle arc.
Your opponent could catch on to what you are doing so save this move until you really need it, or your opponent is very tired.

I would do the straight arm trick with my left, and when my opponent would look at it, I would clobber him with my right! Another trick I would pull was to reach across with my left, then grab the left arm he was using as a block, and pull it down, and hammer him once with a huge right.

I got tired of getting beat so I learned a few tricks that work.

I shouldn’t disclose this on an open forum, but the best trick is to point at the opponent’s feet and tell him his shoe is untied. When he looks down, clobber him, then throw your arms up and take a victory lap.

I like standing on his foot so he can't get away while I hit him.

Doc Kearns (per AJ Liebling) on how Mysterious Billy Smith got his nickname: “He was always doing something mysterious. Like he’d step on your foot and when you looked down he’d bite you on the ear. If I had a guy like that now, I’d lick heavyweights. But we are living in a bad period all around.”

I was taught to spit in their face, and then kick them in the nuts.

Left Hook. No you dont pull your arm back. Its about your legs, stomach, hips, shoulders, changing weight all in sync. Your arms are just an extension of your body. Its about putting your body in position to throw/land a left or right hook (southpaws). Keep your elbows close to your body. This is plenty of information. Practice in the mirror till you figure it out.
