Toney vs. Fraizer?

I have no clue who'd win..... The Jim Toney of 2003 and at 217 pounds certainly had a chance against Smokin' Joe.... Toney had better skills, while Frazier had better power in his hook..... This would be a great fight---in a time machine.....

What Toney performance at Heavyweight would you point me towards as an exhibit for his ability to beat a top 10 ATG heavyweight?

A great natural MW, steroid hyped into a fat 'big' (230+ or thereabout) HW vs a great natural HW (205) - steroid hyped into who knows how much - well take your guess. I am talking about Frazier having the same things to use as Toney.

Toney would be overpowered. His boxing skills and good chin would have seen him last some rounds - maybe 6 or 7. I don't think he could have gone past that.

 

Bonavena routinely stopped through the whole of his career! Sir, where are you coming from. Oscar Boanavena was only stopped once in his career spanning 66 fights. And that was a 15 round stoppage by Muhammad Ali. He won 56 of those fights, 42 by kayo. He drew one and lost only 9. 2 of these losses were by disq. and so doesn't really count. His first loss (by decision) was when he took on the classy, experienced and ranked Zora Folley in early 1965 when Folley was still good in only his (Bonavena's) 9th fight. This shouldn't be really held against him. His other decision losses were to fighters who went by the names of Joe Frazier (twice), Jimmy Ellis, Floyd Patterson and Ron Lyle. A pretty deep cast of characters.

Considering the pedigree of the fighters who actually beat him, Ringo can hardly be dismissed so lightly as you seem to have done.

As for the statement that a Frazier-Toney fight would have been similar to a Frazier-Bonavena fight, you seem to have no idea about the very different fighting styles of James Toney and Oscar Bonavena.

 

Unfair matchup! Frazier steamrolls Toney. Toney has nothing to keep frazier off.

 

I pick Frazier by UD. 10-5 I'm thinking. James takes first 3 and maybe 2 of the later ones.

But I don't see Joe knocking James out for the reason that I don't know what it takes to KO James.

Toney might give Joe some problems early as Joe was a slow starter but once Frazier warmed up and got going Joe systematically wears Toney down and stops him later in the fight. Toney likes to counterpunch but against Frazier that would get him only so far. Joe's constant pressure and punchrate would be too much for Toney. The way to beat a fighter like Toney is to stay on top of him, throw a lot of punches and take him out of his comfort zone and Frazier would do just that and then some.

 

Frazier had the fire power in his punch, Toney tough and gritty but Toney would trade and go out on his shield but he would get smoked

 

I'd love to see this fight, to see Toney get battered. I can actually visualise what would happen. A grinding stoppage, definitely.

 

Much like the Quarry one, probably. Those were horrendous beatings, both, and could be stopped a bit earlier perhaps.
