No. Hagler was too good a boxer (pre-83) and would box Zale like he did Briscoe. Tough fight but I'd give Hagler a clear decision.

Zale was a much better boxer than Briscoe. I wouldn't lump them together.

I take Marvin here ,a little more polish and variety about his work ,but it would be a barnstormer of a scrap.

Sure, Hagler is the sturdier bet, but Tony Zale at the top of his game is one hard fight.

Hagler never had to contend with a guy who could put together such short, destructive combinations so fluidly.

The safe money lays on the boxing and chin of Hagler to simmer down whatever Zale can bring, but 'the man of steel' fought 'till the bone; Hagler would be forced to 'WAR'.

Hagler at the top of his game beat Zale by dec,if the bald man who showed up against Duran and Antuofermo ,is in the ring Zale wins.

It's the logical answer, but the man who rip-roared with Abrams and Graziano is going to make a big noise.

Definitely, i agree, i just don't think he wins, when i have to pick a winner to cement as my choice, it lies with Hagler. But this could be great. The versatility of prime Hagler can see him through if it gets tough though, we all know what Zale struggled with.

Zale at his peak (pre-war) was actually closer to Hagler than a faded Briscoe (or even a prime Briscoe at that).

I think this is a pretty evenly matched fight, with Hagler's slightly greater versatility and ability to switch stances perhaps giving him a slight edge.

Actually, the Zale that beat Graziano was a shell of the prime one that thrice whupped Al Hostak (who was a better fighter than Graziano IMO). He still had the sharp, accurate powerpunching, but the quick footwork and reflexes he once had were non-existent.

Granted, films of Zale at his peak are scarce, but even what little exists is enough to show what a helluva fighter he once was.

the war really did effect Zale career like it did many other fighters one tough sob but I like Hagler in this contest .More versatility, better chin but Zale`s is not bad . a War for sure but Marvin for me middle late stoppage

Hager by tko in 9. Punishing right jab ( very understimated) and superior all around skills slowly melt the "man of steele".

Understood, and I was reluctant to make the analogy, but I do think that Zale's abillity in close would dictate that Hagler box more than he had to after becoming champ.
