You know when someone mentions an up and coming fighter's 'Doug Jones' moment ? Before they peak, they meet a boxer who extends them, and sometimes they sneak through by the seat of their pants. They become a better fighter in consequence. Here's a few examples.

    Muhammad Ali - Doug Jones
George Foreman - Gregorio Peralta 1
Joe Frazier - Oscar Bonavena 1
    Mike Tyson - James Tillis

Any more that you can think of ?

Joe Louis - Max Schmelling 1

To say that this was a baptism of fire for Joe,would be a major understatement. More like a Dante's Inferno !

Sugar Ray Leonard - Roberto Duran 1
Thomas Hearns - Sugar Ray Leonard 1

Obviously I forgot to add that sometimes a first loss can up a fighter's game.
