Tua vs Tunney

Tua was out boxed by Lewis and after sampling a couple of Lennox's rights he was wary of exchanging and settled for going the distance,Lewis had massive height and reach advantages.Tunney was a sharp accurate hitter,but didn't carry Lennox's power, nor was he that big, 190lbs tops .The Marine had great footwork but ,could he hit hard enough to discourage the squat fire hydrant from getting close and landing those massive left hooks? Tua had a top chin so it would be a long night for Tunney, could he keep safe for 12/15 rds
Tunney's chin gets a lot of praise, only down twice in his career,but apart from a faded Dempsey which hitters did he meet?

 

This is THE most dangerous fight for Tunney id say.
Yes the guy was slow on his feet and could be out boxed.Just not sure Tunney can him at bay for 12/15 rounds.
Even an aged Dempsey had him flat on his back.If Tua managed to get him cornered and whacks a few of those left hooks in, well I think it's game over for Gene.
Odds are against Gene imo but what a great win for him if he could do it.

Tunney gives Tua a boxing lesson, since Tua is tailor-made for Tunney. Once Tua’s left hook gets neutralized I don’t see him having much else to offer against Tunney.

 

Tua always seems to come up short in teh most important fights of his career, so I suspect that Tunney woudl out hustle him to get some sort of points win.

 

Then he would probably have shown us a lot more against the opposition available in his own era.

You bring up a lot ot good points. I do think tunney could hit hard enough to get Tua's attention but not hard enough to keeping him off entirely. Tua also had a good engine. Tunney's got a solid chin to where I think he could take a flush shot or two but I do get your point of view. Maybe effortless was a bit naive on my end. Maybe a 60/40 affair in favour of tunney.

 

I would say that Tua, an Olympic bronze medalist at 19, New Zealand amateur champ at 15, was a better boxer than Tunney, who was a prancing little armpuncher who avoided fast twitch fighters. Easy to look like a good and fast boxer when the only footage of you is against slowtwitchers.
