Tyson vs Tunney

I like Tunney as I do so many of the old time fighters but my nostalgia can't get in the way of reason. Tyson would be a bad matchup for Tunney. Gene's movement might keep him out of harm's way for awhile and may even frustrate Mike for a few rounds but it would just be delaying the inevitable. If an old rusty Dempsey could catch Tunney and deck him, imagine what a prime Tyson would do.

 

Yes Tyson would eventually squish him like a bug.

Anyway, there are lots of early Tyson KO victories predicted here not at all unreasonable. But, perhaps the better question is how long does Gene wait before challenging Tyson, because there is no doubt that eventually Gene is good enough to beat Tyson (especially if we assume he is the younger fighter).

If He waits as long as the McBride fight, he is a certainty.

But what if he steps in at the same time as Williams? Or possibly even Lewis, does he dominate Tyson like he dominated Dempsey. I think this is more than likely. I think it unlikely that he could pull a holyfield, but who knows, there were some similarities between the two.

 

...Don't see this lasting long. I don't think Tunney has the punching power to get Tyson's respect, and that was one of the factors which made his win over Spinks look so easy.

Mike can pretty much just bull in without fear, I think. He was murder against smaller, lighter guys because he had the speed and explosiveness to catch them and the punching power to end things quickly.

No disrespect to Tunney, but I'd be surprised if this goes even two rounds.

 

We would certainly be justified in favouring Tyson, but people are wrong to assume that it would necessarily be a blow-out. Tunney is know fool, and he would know that he could not afford to mix it up with Tyson. Expect him to get on his bicycle.

 

Gene would be a heavyweight against Tyson, not a light heavyweight, so your first point is meaningless. Second, you are not being realistic. You're stating that one of the greatest fighters who ever lived would definitely have no chance against Tyson. That's just being completely biased, not realistic. Gene was a brilliant and very intelligent boxer. He could punch and take a punch, and he was always in great shape. Gene would take the one dimensional Tyson to school and eventually stop him.

 

Easy KO1 win for Tyson. Tunney is very overrated regarding his supposed cleverness and skills.

 

What has lead you to this conclusion?

 

I think Tunney is/was a historically a greater fighter than Tyson, but H2H, if I was a betting man, overall I suspect Tyson would beat Tunney. I wouldn't put cash on Gene in this one. I think at some point he gets caught and Tyson would complete what the post-prime Dempsey wasn't able to.

If you are saying that Tunney was a lot more offensively orientated than most people think, then I am not going to disagree with you. That doesn’t mean that he wasn’t skilled however, or that there wasn’t method in what he did.
