Tyson vs Tunney

My point was Tunney looked disappointing from the point of view of cleverness, skills, ring generalship in too many fights, at different stages of his career, way too many times compared to fighters at other weights who were really clever and skilful, who had off nights too, but not *that* often.

 

What is the point of this thread. Might as well put Lennox Lewis against John L Sullivan. Tyson KO within 40 seconds.

 

Hi Janitor. I think the point he's making is that Tunney is not the heavyweight version of Willie Pep that so many here try and make him out to be. He was VERY hittable throughout his career. This would spell his doom against Tyson, imo.

People also overestimate his chin. While it was no doubt sturdy, it also must be remembered that his chin was never tested against any huge punchers with the exception of a past prime Dempsey, who hurt, floored and almost stretched him regardless.

If we are deciding how a guy would do if reincarnated at his peak, what he may have added with training is irrelevant. And we do not even know if it would help or hurt him.

Though these weights are CW, not LHW.

Either way, as most all see, Tunney would have little to avoid the concussive power of Tyson. Tyson would have more than enough speed to catch Tunney, who was no stick & mover anyway & not a giant who could even effectively tie him up.

I am unambiguous in saying that Tyson should be favoured, but I think Gene might throw him a curve ball!

 

The same could be said for Spinks. Tyson rolled over him. Reputation counts for nothing here...Just like Spinks, Tunney did not have the size or strength to deal with Tyson, it's that simple.
