Sorry if this has been covered. I was looking at his career record, fight by fight and for all his achievements i couldnt pick out a defining fight. Most greats have one or 2. On paper you could say Spinks, but Spinks put up no resistance.Holmes was outta retirement ( although he went on to do well). Alot of Tysons opponents didnt bring the best version of themselves or was that down to Mike ?. When you go through his reign , his resume looks a little thin ? Or is that just hindsight ? Guys like Tubbs , Biggs, Tucker, Spinks looked about the best oppostion out there until they got in the ring. I always thought Tyson for those few years was awesome. For the first time in many years i looked fight by fight and wondered about the guys he beat. Then again, he missed nobody apart from maybe Witherspoon. It just struck me there was no defining fight. Maybe if he had managed to beat Douglas and then had the tough win over Ruddock, those would have been his defining fights (ones where he had to overcome adversity) Anybody see where im coming from ?
It's really hard to pick his best win. Holmes is by far the best name, but he was old and inactive Spinks was considered the best opponent before the Tyson fight Berbick was very good win, first world belt for Tyson at the age of 20 Tucker - unifying 3 belts at 21. Probably one of these.
These answer kind of confirm my point ? Most great are measured by their wins where the had a struggle. Tyson blew people away ( Berbick/ Tubbs/ Williams/Spinks) or won a landslide on points ( Smith/ Tucker) . The fights that went a few rounds( Holmes/Thomas/Bruno/Biggs) weren't fights where the outcome was ever too much in doubt. He never won a struggle whilst he was champ ( like the Ruddock fight) or IF he'd have found a way v Douglas. They seem to be the fights that define an era ?
He didnt really have an ali v liston win. Or a frazier v ali win. Or a foremann v frazier win. Wasnt really his fault after holmes was finished there wasnt really a dominate champ for him to beat. All the guys left were pretty much of the same level. Tbf for all the stick the 80,s heavyweights get...the standard was actually pretty high. There were some skilled fighters back then much more skilled than we see today in the heavyweight division for me. But no dominant champ. He pretty much battered everyone till douglas tho. Tyson was never about a signature win...cause he doesnt really have one. It was more about how he beat them...he pretty much smashed through the heavyweight division at 20 years old. In hindsight it was a pity there wasnt an established lewis or holyfield or holmes around when tyson was at his peak. Would have answered a lot of questions once and for all. Because at his very best he did look pretty sensational for however long it lasted.
Rumours of Tucker's hand injury was reported days before the fight took place. He says he was concerned that Don King would have had him stripped if he pulled out and he'd never get his chance again, so he went through with the fight. That's just part of the boxing business though. I still rate it as one of Tyson's best wins. Berbick was a better win though, if you look at the way Tyson dealt with him.
Oh yes, I keep forgetting. Perhaps Tucker's the best win then. And I don't think Tucker's hand injury was a serious matter for a boxer anyway, it's not like once having a marital arrangement with a beautiful actress or indulging in some Japanese snatch.
