Just watched this fight and it was a great fight and a great upset,Phillips impressed me but i think Kostya was still a little green he had only 18 pro fights also i noticed after the 6th round Tyzsu seemed to look disheartend like he couldnt believe Phillips could take his shots, Is it true Tyzsu was being lined up to fight DeLaHoya like the commentators were suggesting back then?

I read the reason a long time ago but I can't remember. Anybody know? Phillips defended the title three times before losing to Millet and moving back up to 147, but he was back down to 140 soon enough. I would think a guy like Tszyu would want another crack at him even if Phillips wasn't the mando or had lost a few.

Cool Vince was the terminator in that fight. He took Kostya's best and outlasted him. Hard fight to watch sometimes as a fan of Kostya's but awesome effort by Vince. Argueably helped Kostya's career in a way because he came back like a man posessed after that loss.

For all the drug and alcohol problems, the ups and downs in his career, that was the night the true potential of Vince Phillips was shown to the world.

Do you think Kostya would ever get the better of Phillips?

Kostya wasnt green at all. He was an EXCELLENT amateur. He was just too ****ing cocky. Phillips was a crack head who wasnt going nowhere. BUT he wasnt a slouch and had a booming right hand. Kostya chin was never that great, and when Phillips tapped it it shook him to the sole of his boots and all he had to offer was a wry smile as if to say "WTF is going on im loosing".

Not likely. Kostya was used to dictating the pace and boxing circles around guys. When Phillips punched back he didnt have an answer for his reach nor his jab or his powerful right hand. Kostya ate ALOT of leather in that fight and thats why he wilted near the end and up until he got caught on the ropes for the TKO. Kostya never responded well to pressure. Judah did the same to him in there encounter in round 1. Hatton did the same in there bout. Sharmba tried to do it in there bout by taking the fight to him but he didnt have the power of Judah or Phillips to make that tactic work for an old injured vet like himself. Phillips set the blue print on how to beat Kostya.

One thing - Phillips could bang.

    Seriously.

Watch him against Hatton and see him nearly get Ricky out of there, despite losing pretty much every round.

He hurt Ricky badly in the later rounds but he was so old he was spitting dust by the time he and Ricky fought. I dont know where Warren found him. The poor guy was even fighting in the K1 at one stage to pay bills i guess..

The fight was nearly called off at the last minute because he insisted on being paid via bankers draft rather than an unsecured cheque....

Seems like he must have been clean at the time!

Familiar story with Warren, reneging on agreements!

The fight was the reason why the Witter Hatton bout never took place because little "Wicky" suffered a bad cut and scuppered the bout using the cut as an excuse.

    Don't remember that......

    But you are probably right.

After the Phillips win though (Tackie apart) his competition level dropped at an alarming level until he took on Tszyu.

To be quite honest, after this fight he should have taken on Kelson Pinto for the WBO strap, or dropped to lightweight as the champs there were pretty average at the time (bar 1) - he would have made 135 easily at that point.

According to Frank Pinto pulled out at the last minute of there WBO mooted clash. More like he and his team got cold feet. Pinto was undefeated and was a rangy box puncher who coudl really crack. He would have KO`ed Hatton thats real. Hatton reneged in his WBO crack twice and once with the WBA. The kid had way too much opportunitys and far too many excuses.

    From what I understand......

Pinto was never coming over in the first place, and was used as a bargaining tool to get Hatton to stay with SN.

Who was the other WBO shot at?

From memory, the WBA was Vivian Harris - why the **** turn that down, bearing in mind Hatton would have walked through him?
