Undisputed Champions

ok...my argument was...and i am not saying calzaghe wasnt the best...but when he was standing in the ring with his collection of belts being announced as the 'undisputed' champion after beating kessler....there was lucian bute sitting at home on his sofa rubbing his ibf belt and wondering why his 'ibf champion of the world' belt wasnt a dispute...

 

I thought he won the wbc off castillo?

Dont think he had any other belts at that time though so not undisputed

 

That's exactly why titles are ****ing useless.

 

If thats the case I dont think we will ever have a undiputed champion again, someone holding, wbc,wba,wbo ,ibf and ring belts How would you manage that with mandatorys?

Also think Berrio won the vacant IBF? and Bute beat him

 

Old arguement which evokes differing opinions, but winning the Ring title means much more than all of the other alphabets combined. I accept they don't enforce mandatories (which seems to be the main gripe by most of the dissenters), but I am solely talking about winning the Ring title as opposed to picking up a number of bull**** belts that have no lineage or clear claim to being superior to any of it's alphabet cousins.

Ahhhhh just boxrec'd it and it was the vacant wbc 'international ' light welter title......... which doesnt help toward undiputed status lol!!!

 

Losfer: The Ring rankins are pretty shocking as if late. Therefore the title means less IMO.

That's P4P, though, and I agree that it is shocking. The divisional rankings are still pretty good, though, and there are only a few titlists and it's also hard to argue with any of the champions they have. Show me a better mainstream system and I'd be prepared to concede the point, but the Ring is by far the best out of a shocking bunch.

 

I don't give a sh*t how many belts you hold, if you beat the best in your division you're the champion, call it undisputed or whatever you want. If there's a lesser fighter walking around with a strap it really shouldn't matter.

 

The Ring got off to a **** start by failing to recognise the linear claimant in each and every division (where applicable of course) and instead awarded it's favourite fighter.

Whilever people are willing to pay ''sanctioning fees'' (whatever the **** that means) to some snake then it will always remain marginal at best.

At the minute it's just a gimmick I'm afraid, though the idea is plausible.

 

Nah, his intentions weren't so noble. Rather than face his mandatory challenger Stieglitz, (he didn't like fighting mandatories, did he?), he opted to fight none other than ... Peter Manfredo Jr.

 

He did. Even had to travel to Germany second time around, due to the fact that Warren's sway with the WBO was dwarfed by Universum's influence.

 

well...you can call it disputed...
i hear what you are saying...but if there is another guy in the division with either of wba wbo ibf wbc belts, any one of those belts, no matter how inferior the fighter may be...that is still a 'dispute'...
its about the belt more than the boxer, the belt is the dispute...if like in lucian bute's case, the ibf belt that he had wasnt enough to 'dispute' calzaghes 'undisputed' in most peoples eyes, then it more or less means that every ibf title belt in every weight was bellittled

 

Quite funny how people criticise Calzaghe for not generating enough US exposure earlier in his career, then criticise him for fighting Manfredo at the behest of HBO who had no interest whatsoever in Stieglitz...
