Carnera fraud? legitimate ATG? or something in between

  1. Carnera was a fraud and was never an elite fighter got to the top on size and matchmaking.

    3.6%
  2. Carnera was a full blown ATG with elite skill, up there with the best big HWs ever

    3.6%
  3. Something in between. Good fighter and very large HW but not in the same class as a Lennox Lewis

    92.9%

Not being in the same league as Lennox Lewis, I just don't see how "just being ok" can be somewhere between Lewis level and an absolute joke.

Being a solid world champion should count for something.

just being ok is exactly between Lennox lewis and an absolute Joke. But the option in between isnt even "just ok" .......its actually "a good fighter, and a very large man" which means his skills were good(which in my opinion is a very generous assessment) and he also happened to be very large which resulted in him being world level.
I dont know why youre fixating on him having been a champion, the poll is about his ability not his legacy. Leon spinks became the HW champiion and Deontay wilder has 5 defenses against nobodies so neither the championship or the defenses or a be all end all in terms of ability

First of all, compared to Carnera, Wilder is not yet a champion. Only once he beats the best HW in the world can he even begin a comparison with Carnera.

Second of all Lennox is an all time great. An actual one. Top ten lock. Carnera just being ok puts him with Bill Brennan, Bob pastor, lee Oma, Zora Foley, Scott Ledoux, Renaldo Snipes, Carl Williams, Ray Mercer kind of level. And none of those guys could ever become the worlds best.

You have missed out an echelon.

But well done kid, you took me up on the challenge and made a poll.

Again none of the options was "just ok". It was "good fighter and very big man, just not at Lennox Lewis level.....and im pretty sure at least one oft those you listed could beat Jack Sharkey

None of those guys beat Jack Sharkey. Not with a title on the line anyway.

The option left for Primo was "just okay".

    It went "bum"

    Just Okay

    Lennox Lewis.

No, he never was. When he got his title chance both Max Baer and Max Schmeling were rated above him , number one and number two respectively. Carnera was number 4.
Both would have been heavy favourites to beat him and the one who got the chance to do so ,[Baer]massacred him.
If he had fought his number one contender straight after winning the title he would have been dethroned immediately.

But he beat the #1 guy. The title holder.
Isn't that what the title and the word champion is made for?

Sharkey would have been the outsider against either Baer or Schmeling he got a gift decision against the German.
Carnera was never the best fighter in the heavyweight division. Two of the three men rated above him beat him, the other , Schmeling, never got the chance.

Aye but conversely when he lost his title to Baer he was rated number 1 in the world.

Every dog had his day and the night he beat Sharkey, he had his.

Sharkey was ahead when he fouled Scheming. So he had a moral victory in loss. sharkey beat Schmeling but it was not satisfactory. Max got the moral victory that time. So Both had the moral victory over the other. The two were level in that respect.

Why should Sharkey be an outsider against Baer? Sharkey knocked Laughran spark out. Laughran outpointed Baer.

Baer knocked Schmeling out did he not? Baer also beat Levinsky,Risko, and Carnera who all beat Sharkey!Plus Heeney who drew with Sharkey!
Oh no not again, when did these fights occur? Baer was 21 years old when Loughran beat him! Loughran also beat Sharkey, being"selective" again?
