vertical jab

I know there's a ton of jabs but I came across a trainer talking about a variation I haven't seen before. He calls it a vertical jab, thumb up,no turn in fist. He said its less predictable.

Anyone see this before,thoughts? Any fighters actually use this?

up jab I've heard it been called, Mike Tyson and Ricky Hatton use it

 

It's a jab with your fist turned upwards (so your thumb is completely parallel to the floor).

It's usually used to split a tight guard that's difficult to penetrate with a horizontal fist, it's also much quicker when used in combinations than a usual jab that requires partial rotation of the fist/shoulder

Wlad also uses it when he has someone infront of him shelling up and finds himself unable to get his jab through

 

I use it for that exact reason. To jab through a tight guard.

 

What are you talking about? It's an extremely useful variation of the jab.

 

don't have a problem with improvising getting throw the guard,,,wouldn't recommend using it on the heavy bag ,,an injury waiting to happen

 

up jab. I was sparring a guy by the name of Garrett Wilson (top ten cruiser at one point), and he showed me a bunch of jab variations.
