Um...I guess Horizontally? Wouldn't a vertical hook be an uppercut?

use the search feature iv seen this question several times! I always throw mine with the palm facing me knuckles vertical. Its easier on the wrists however when punching a human head lol i start vertical and as i make contact try and punch through the target and turn that hand over too

Yes they do. I don't know that doing it like that is any better or worse though.

I just like to do it like that because I feel like I get more snap in it.

I do it with palm facing downwards. Somehow it feels as if I'm getting more snap, but I really cant tell you for sure.

most mexican gyms teach hooks with your knuckles facing your opponent, dont know why, ive heard things like it is safer on your wrists, or that its easier to land on the jaw.
its the way i was thought but i really have no idea what the advantages are.

I throw it with my knuckles facing my opponent because thats how my coach told me to...

Throw it however you are instructed.

  12. I'm not under expert supervision right now but I believe the angle of the hand really dictates the direction you want your body and arm to move after the punch aswell as how and where it's landing.

The vertical lends itself to the powerful uppercut angles of a hook and the horizontal is more like a straight punch with good follow through.

I doubt many boxers are staunch on it, even mayweather mixes it up.

vertical hook is more of a looping punch, whereas a hook where your palm is horizontal is generally a more controlled punch. it depends on the situation and distance from your opponent which one you should throw.

Knuckles facing the ceiling for speed, distance, less defensive risk. More of a "gotcha" or accumulation punch like a Jab+1.

Knuckles facing the opponent and palm towards me for power and/or the guy has just made a MAJOR defensive F up.
