i think he will come back stronger and better than ever

i wasn't a big fan of him before the maidana fight, but seeing everybody jump on him for not wanting to "go out on his shield" has made me root for him... we're not living in the freakin' medieval ages, this is a sport... everybody can't be arturo gatti

Like Victor said, "I fought a stupid fight" and "I really thought I could knock him out". He lived and learned. You can't knock them all out. Victor already has another fight in the works. Oh by the way, he was here at home a few weeks ago. He was positive and ready to get back in the ring.

As others have pointed out, you can't take what a fighter says immediately following getting their can kicked too seriously. He was down on himself and wasn't exactly in a solid state of mind. With that said, I think he could've beaten Madiana had he taken his time and not rushed in for the KO. With Oscar and Shane looking on, I'm sure it wasn't easy and the poor guy was probably heart broken. I think Madina took his heart and spirit in that fight but I think seeing as Ortiz is so young he will rebound from it and be back.

One thing that Ortiz has on his side is time. He needs to just think long and hard about continuing in his chosen profession. The problem he has right now is all mental. Hope he can straighten things out because I think he has great potentials.

just cause someone quits once doesn't make him a quitter. If he does it again anytime soon then we can start with the labels.

    give the kid a break

Ortiz was so hyped and for good reason, he's got real skills and real power. But the Maidana fight was a little too over Ortiz's head, I think if Ortiz dedicated himself right he could come back and beat Maidana in a rematch, but he has a lot of work to do before then.

He's a young kid. Ton of talent, great power, good work ethic in the gym.

He ran into a wall in Maidana. Few people ever have to suffer the mental and physical beatings that kid had to in that fight.

He'll be back. He just needs to get past a very bad experience.

No boxer at Victors level is a quitter. So many people have no idea what it takes to get that good at boxing, what pro boxers give up day to day. He's got all the heart he needs to succeed, just needs some maturity.

i wish more people thought like this. the guys a professional fighter for god sakes. not only is he doing something that less than .01% of people in the world can or will do, but he is (or was, i guess) also one of the most ridiculously hyped and pressured fighters probably of all time. he was carrying A LOT of weight on those shoulders.

Ortiz reminds me of a young Vargas and we all know what happened to Vargas when he went out on his shield.

Live to fight another day. The problem really lies with GBP, as soon as Victor gives up, Oscar has to talk to him and make sure he doesn't say anything stupid. Victor didn't show a lack of desire or a lack of courage, he showed a lack of intelligence by saying what we already knew. Even if he comes up with a blatant lie like "I can't see" or "the cut was bothering me and I didn't think I could win without it" it's a conceivable excuse. To say something that pretty much coincided with quitting makes him LOOK weak.

I think Ortiz will bounce back eventually...but as of right now, he's got the skeletons in the closet to deal with.
