I've heard and read different opinions regarding the exact cause of the Smith vs Williams stoppage. Was it an accidental headbutt? Was it a deliberate headbutt? Was it a punch? Was it a punch which started it, followed by a headbutt which made it worse? If available, could / should referees be able to call on video replays, as they do in rugby league / rugby union / cricket etc?
There's no two ways about it was a blatant headbutt and intentional and it caused the cut I think there should be some recourse but where does it end . Every fight being broken down with replays and analysed. Not sure
It's too subjective. It's not like deciding whether a ball was over a line or if a foul was inside or out a penalty area. Nobody other than the boxer truly knows if he meant to butt someone, how can people agree agree on a definitive answer. Plus when are they meant to do it, in between rounds? A time out can't be called because that is negating a big part of the sport which is dealing with fatigue. You can't be giving people rests.
Yeah I take your point. However I was only suggesting it could / would be used when a cut ends the fight, so nobody would be getting an undue rest, the fight's over. I concede it wouldn't be quick, or indeed easy, to scroll back rounds to determine when the exact cut occurred. Not fully proof but better than just relying on the ref? A wrong decision on punch or butt could be career changing.
Convinced that the injury to Williams' eye was the result of a deliberate headbutt by Smith. Authorities should overturn Smith's victory, rule the bout a no-contest and order an immediate rematch.
This is an interesting post. I was speaking to a Welsh lad I work with about what happened in this fight. He is not a boxing fan as such, but watch a documentary about Williams on S4C a few years ago so wanted to know how he got on. I explained how the fight ended. He replied "Why don't they have a video ref like int rugby?" got me thinking a bit this week.... I remember a card a Hennasey on ITV 4 about 10 years ago. Canadian guy with a bit of a profile came over and was up against a TTG. The Ghanaian stuck his nut on the Canadian in the first and as per rules at the time, was awarded a TKO. The Canadian never recovered and his career fizzled out
You know how many fights would have gone the other way if boxing had used "modern" equipment to check referees calls? It has to be quite a lot. So I'm all for it, and it should have been implemented a very long time ago if I had anything to say about it, but I'm pretty sure the powers that be in boxing wouldn't like that at all. Then they can't count on the referees anymore to make the wrong call "in the heat of the moment" in favor of the home/featured fighter, when the situation calls for it.

I want to say Yes, replays could be very useful in certain circumstances but where does it stop? Knockdowns? Was it a tangle of legs of a genuine knockdown? That can be just as important in a close fight and can decide a fight. Low blows? If a fighter gets deducted points for a low blow and it is argued it was boarderline, again it can decide a fight. Having replays could get messy.
The problem with replays is where does it stop - officials get wound up with getting every decision right...I'm no rugby fan but every time there is a try or infringement the ref starts asking for video - and don't get me started or where they ask for video and then get it wrong.... Leave it as it is... It looked deliberate but its part of the game i guess - look at ward doing it to kessler - not saying its right but it down to the ref to spot it and judge accordingly
Is the present system working? And are the refs doing a great job ? Was ward dq d against Kessler? Hmmm? Time for change....
