MARTIN MURRAY is tipped to become the next sporting success story from St Helens.

The town’s rugby league team are unbeaten in 21 matches and lifted the Challenge Trophy on Saturday beating Hull at Wembley Stadium.
Murray (7-0) plans to emulate those world beaters and already has the British middleweight title in his sights.

His first fight of the new season takes place at VIP’s next top quality show at Wigan’s Robin Hood Centre on Sunday 14th September when he faces a selected opponent in a six rounder.

And confident promoter Steve Wood believes the 25-year-old will in the shake up for Wayne Elcock’s domestic title by next summer.
Provided he chalks up win number eight the middleweight division’s mystery man will feature in a Sky Sports televised show in November

Wood said: “Everybody at VIP Promotions is excited by Martin and over the next few months each fight will be a step up in class.

“Within nine or ten months he should be ready to challenge for his first major title.”

Murray, a regular at Knowsley Road for Saints home games said: “I’d fight for the British title right now, but I have to understand it is about the right fights at the right time.”

Martin’s next big test is chief support to Alex Matvienko’s clash with Lee Edwards for the vacant British Masters light-middleweight title.
Also on the bill are some of the brightest prospects in the North West including Carl Dilks (Liverpool), Jack Armfield (Blackpool), Chris Johnson (Preston), Scott Mitchell (Bolton), Rick Godding (Bolton) and Lee Jennings (Liverpool)

Tickets for VIP Promotions first show of the new season are available from the box office 01942 828550 and Alex Matvienko 07841 115 072

Murray is a quality-looking fighter. I’ve been very impressed with what I’ve seen of him on Channel M: measured, hits solidly, both head and body, and picks his punches very well. He’s got a decent future and Renda, if it’s still going ahead at least, will tell us more. That said, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Cello has pulled out; he did the same against Kevin Concepcion earlier in the year.

Talking of Kev, he said to me that he really rates Murray and would like to fight him in the next year.

Hi Stegsie. What has happened to Mark Thompson?

We know he has had a couple of non televised fights since he fought Horta but when is he due to be seen fighting at top domestic level?

I appreciate that due to fact that Doherty has dropped down to light welter and pulled out of the eliminator Mark will no longer be fighting Doherty but does this mean that Mark will be facing the winner of Muttley and O'Donnell?

From what I have seen, Mark has the ability to go places but he has certainly been conspicuous by his absence of late. Any news?

Perhaps VIP could shed some light on whats happening with Steve Foster Jr's career....

I understand he is taking a break from the sport after pulling out of the Fehintola fight.
