I'm going to say Watson by close decision or late stoppage but it's so hard to say. I get the feeling that we never saw the best of Graham.
difficult fight to decide, both worked best when taking the roll as a counter puncher, and not attacking. think would have to pick Watson on the chance he might tag Herol a few too many times.
it was Watson we never saw the best of, his career being halted by tragedy, he still had much more to offer. Graham had 3 chances at world titles, how many more does a man need? Graham just wasn't the fighter many had hoped for him. Good but not great. I'd favour Watson more times than not, just simply a more complete fighter IMHO.
Watson fought out of skin as an attacking fighter in his 2nd Eubank fight. He was a light-heavy making middleweight and would out-size and out-strength Herol, who was a light-middle trying to build himself into a middleweight.
The Watson who beat Lee and Benn might just be smart enough to edge a 12 rounder. I think Graham would come in a bit over confident and there will be periods where he will almost embarrass Michael, but I take Watson's work rate to impress the judges and gain a split nod. I think Graham would prefer a 15 rounder, and if that were to happen, I think he edges the close decision.
I feel that Watson is made for Graham. The only concern I would have is the size difference. If they were both natural at say, split the difference 160, I think Herrol out speeds and out boxes the rather wooden, mechanical and somewhat slow Watson.
Good fight this but would go with Watson. I think out of that era give or take a few years Watson was the best of the lot (Eubank, Benn, Graham, Collins).
We're it not for his tragic injury, you could well have been proven right. It's just that, in a head to head as per the thread title, I think Herrol was all wrong for him. The old styles make fights thing etc..
Harsh... McCallum arguably had his finest performance against Watson. Like Graham The Bodysnatcher was scared by a Zairian Italian going into their bout. Watson bottled it against McCallum, but came back strong, like he did the night he lost to the criminally underrated Cook. The Bomber seemed never to be quite the same after losing his '0'.
