He's clearly faded, so I think this is just his way of adapting. Look at how Hopkins fought at his prime and how he's 'fighting' now, because anybody knows if he tries to fight like he did before he won't last long against any opponent.
He was always a good brawler too [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nJOLgeHNRwQ[/ame] that's not new but since his long break in 2009 it seems that he lost a lot of accuracy and coordination in his Punches. You can see it in his comaback fight vs Perdomo look much many punches missed [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sLVnFgp6PK0&feature=related[/ame] In the Ward fight it was a lack of agression too. Look what he did at the end of the Calzaghe fight. In the Froch fight his fighting mentality was back but he still lacks accuracy and coordination in his punches compared too his fights in the past.
45 fights and 35-40 wins (more or less) with the same style.. I think he knows its time for some changing now, the Ward fight showed that clearly
Yeah his accuracy is definately missing, he was never the same after that long break he took because of the disagreement with the promotor he had. He tried to ruin Kesslers career, and in some way he did succeed.
This. He still has enough left in the tank for a few more fights at the very top of his class, but I think his body is at the early stages of fading, and as an elite fighter he probably understands that and is finding ways to make it work until he hangs em up.
Kessler's only adjustment was standing his ground and not backing straight back. It took him all most half the fight with froch and his trainer screeming at him to do so. He had to stand there in the fire to win that fight which put him out of his element and he handled it well seeing he's had so many fights. He has lost some attributes but he showed some great timing in a left hook I didn't know he had before which he threw under fire. Kessler will do fine and I think his fight with green will be even better than the froch fight.
I found it very amusing that you could see Kessler literally fighting with himself not to back straight up. He sure as hell wasn't accurate with his punches to the head, but his body punching won him that fight. Also he had problems with Froch's reach and had to lunge in with his punches. I think that had some impact on his accuracy as well.
You know ppl don't speak about it much, but when hot prospects come through the ranks they're often matched up with a lot of undersized guys. When Kessler was on the way up he always looked huge and dominating in the ring, but now he's at the top of the sport he's fighting guys like Ward and Froch who are the same height and taller, and just as fast and athletic or even faster. You can't win fights with that straight up 1-2 style of boxing against taller, faster fighters. Thats why he's mixing it up more I think.
If you were trying to be funny with the first comment then I don't know what to tell you. Kessler's losses were because of him backing straight back and not standing his ground. This was obviously a guy who worked on holding his ground alot in training prior to the froch fight. I agree about the body punching. I thought he slowed froch down for atleast 3 rounds late in the fight before froch caught his second wind for the championship rounds and made them both a coinflip. That was the difference in the fight IMO also. Froch had never been attacked too the body in that fashion before. I also feel that kessler showed the whole super six WHO HAS THE BEST CHIN AT 168. Also on holding his ground, I knew he would have to do so. I don't know if I would use the term fighting with himself though. I just felt his coordination was off when doing so. He was frigity and off balance alot. Standing your ground has more to do with standing and exchanging. It's standing and blocking and doing what you can to not let your opponent get momentum. When froch would come in with a full head of steam kessler backed up and got caught with some big shots.
I guess I have a dry sense of humor. It wasn't a knock against Kessler since I'm a big Kessler fan. I just thought it was obvious that he was doing something he wasn't used to at all. It was very clear that he was consciously struggling to change a movement pattern that was pretty much ingrown. I know that there is more to standing your ground than just setting your feet down and throwing punches. Kessler used lateral movement and even improved a little bit on his head and upper body movement. It was very clear in this fight that there is more to Froch than what meets the eye. If Kessler had given him just a little bit more momentum then he would have had more than he could handle.
kessler may be passed his peak but what i've seen lately isnt the result of someone who is passed their peak, rather, it looks like someone who has just gotten away from what he's good at. kessler never used to loop his shots like he is now. you would be hard pressed to find a consistant, hard, crisp, straight 1-2 in the froch fight but that is what kessler used to do so well. froch was there all night for it, especially since he was fighting off his back foot a lot. instead, kessler was looping these very slopping right hands in and leaving himself very exposed for froch to counter. this is a major reason why it looks like he's brawling a lot lately.
