what if monzon...

Both Griffith and Bouttier, in their 1973 rematches with Monzon, respectively, fought a subpar Monzon, actually. Early in that year, he was shot twice, in the left arm and shoulder by his wife (poor woman was just defending herself). The surgeon had to leave one bullet in him for some reason, and whether it was the shoulder or the arm, I don't know. Now that was in the early months of '73, and the rematches with Griffith and Bouttier came shortly thereafter in that same year. I'd say that Monzon was probably not at his best with a bullet in him, and both fights went 16, instead of the tko's he scored over both men earlier.

 

To correct myself, the two fights went the distance of 15, not 16. A stupid typo always happens when I type too fast.

 

I actually forgot about the shooting but that is part of my point. I know Monzon was a great middleweight but again, based on the tapes, I cannot tell ho great ... the Griffith fights are two that exist.

Again, has anyone seen the Briscoe title bout and does it exist on tape?

You've got a point. The 'flash' of Robinson would always make him more eye catching.

As a fighter, Monzon should be right up there, but he was no role model, and that hurts the package.

 

Just having some fun while getting the feel of the joint ... you mentioned it's a bit hot here ... some guys seem to have watched a few too many prison flicks ... that being said, some cool guys as well ... trying to see the lay of the land and the overall knowledge of the posters ...

 

He's way up there for sure Ted. I agree with your premise he would be absolutely revered under the circumstances of the thread.

 

Once upon a time I had a talk with Rich Giachetti about Monzon and he said he felt without question that Monzon would have destroyed Robinson at middle because of the height difference and that Monzon would be punching down. I have a hard time seeing anyone destroy Robinson but Carlos would be extremely tough for anyone.

One of my dream fights would be Monzon (of Nino) v.s. Hagler (of Minter) .. in a very tough call I pick Hagler ...

 

Tyson also picked carlos over robinson at 160.

 

You are right. I forgot that Richie told me he had that conversation with Mike, Mike agreed and it was part of how Mike accepted Richie as a trainer for a while ... good memory!
