If he beat Sonny Liston in September 1962,,,,Patterson would have gone to Europe and Sweden in 1963 for boxing exhibitions, and most likely a '1963 summer' Title Defense in the U.K. versus Henry Cooper, the Britsh Boxing Champion. I'm sure a bout with Harold Johnson or Willie Pastrano would have happened next, in early-1964, followed by a late-1964 or early-1965 fight with Eddie Machen, and then George Chuvalo in mid-1965. If Cassius Clay had changed his name to Muhammad Ali, he would have never gotten a fight, and would probably have been forced by Floyd to take on a couple of more Top-10 challengers (Sonny Liston, Zora Folley, Ernie Terrell, Eddie Machen or Doug Jones II). Floyd Patterson wouldn't have met Cassius Clay until sometime in 1966.
Clay and the NOI would be very unlikely to go public with this radical step until after he had the title safely in hand. With his promotional bluster, he'd have made his challenge a lucrative option for Floyd.
