    I understand the whole concept of 'it takes time building a PPV star'.....

    But there's guys out there with enough fights and success to be on higher purses, isn't there?

    E.g. Thurman, Crawford and Wilder:

    - Had between 28 and 40 fights
    - World title successes

    .....Unable to generate anything near $5,000,000

    Even the international fighters, like GGG, a guy who is as exciting as it gets, can barely generate a couple of million.

    Why has it just vanished?

    Pacquiao and Mayweather are PPV anomalies.

    Joshua isn't generating much in the US and Canelo 5 years ago was generating what the top Americans currently are.

    @CST80

    I was actually looking for a serious answer as it looks like it has just vanished....

    Is it poor promoting?

    With the exception of Wilder, top guys like Thurman/Crawford/Spence/Garcia are not only dull......
    But we never get to hear from them.

    Must of been third time I’ve used this excuse today but those top earners are Masons,Canelos own symbolism is a take on the Masonic compass,AJ is forever flashing their hand signs and Floyd v McGregor was full of Masonic symbols inc the compass for no good reason other than to show who they roll with.
    Oh and I forgot GGG =777 which is more Masonic BS,quite simply that’s where the moneys at and it bugs me no end as the big fights are ending up like controlled WWE affairs, think about it?

    It took awhile for Mayweather to turn into Money Mayweather, his first PPV against Gatti, and was 9 years after he turned pro, then the Judah and Baldomir PPV's followed, none of them were smash hits, it took another megastar to boost Mayweather into the stratosphere in De La Hoya. Then he retired after the Hatton win and did the WWE Big Show angle and Dancing With The Stars, which gave him mainstream exposure. While he was away Manny became a megastar in his absence, so when he returned everyone was clamoring for May-Pac, for almost a decade, so the slow build to that match kept people interested and coming back, he developed a legion of haters who wanted and rooted to see him lose, and a legion of fanboys, and at this point its 14 to 20 years into his career. Mayweather was far from an overnight sensation. These things take time.:deal: And while May and Pac were on top, none of the promoters had the foresight to have a backup contingency plan in place for when they retire.

    It's with Mayweather. That greedy ******* never passed the torch. He won't even pass the salt. But seriously, it's with Mayweather, Pacquiao, Canelo, and Cotto. If Mayweather and Pacquiao had done right and fought the top welterweights of the next generation then they would have been beaten by Thurman, Brook, Khan, and Spence and now they would be pay per view stars. As it is, Canelo and Cotto knocked the most shine off of them. You need to fight a pay per view star to become one yourself. That's why it was so important for Wladimir Klitschko to fight Anthony Joshua, Tyson Fury, and David Haye. He passed the torch like Oscar De La Hoya did in the previous generation, keeping things going.

    I must admit that I didn't think that Mayweather would get as big as he did. When he first tried to reinvent himself it was with that philthy rich persona. That didn't work too well for him and he went to the Money May along with the bad boy image and the rest is history. However, he did poses a unique and phenomenal set of skills to back him up along with a huge smile and charisma to boot. His rags to riches story was on point. Drug dealing father, crackhead mom etc. The whole package. He also had great fighters to challenge and that's a must. Having said all that, I think that Wilder can get there faster but he can't sustain it longer. He is blessed with being a heavyweight with devastating power, plenty of charisma, a big mouth and formidable and well loved adversary in Joshua. All he needs is the hype and that takes money. Plus information moves light years faster than it did when Mayweather was coming up. This Joshua fight, if hyped right can turn him into an instant mega star. Look at Mcgregor.
