I've haven't really seen much of Sweet Pea other than the Chavez fight, so I'm wondering what was his best night in the ring?
Nelson and Ramirez II. The McGirt rematch at WW was also a good performance for heavy leather getting thrown around by him. Not quite the way he was inclined to fight at his peak, but impressive nonetheless.
I thought he looked like a boxing master in the 2nd Ramirez fight, that was a lesson. My personal fav. Others worth a mention are, Nelson, Haugen, Chavez & Mcgirt II. :good
:good I also prefer both of the McGirt fights (primarily the rematch) to the second Ramirez fight, which I think gets overrated.
I bought about 6 Sweet Pea fights a few years ago...2 I had already seen but the rest would be the first time I had viewed them..I didnt know much about boxing then and certainly not about Sweet Pea's record..So when I popped in Whitaker-Nazario I was expecting to see a multiple round display of Sweet Pea's defensive brilliance and I even made sure I had an extra half an hour before work after school. The records were read..I though Nazario must be pretty good being the WBA champ and having beaten Edwin Rosario for the title..I guy I had actually heard of then. Things started as expected..Just feeling each other out..Pea looked the much quicker and more skilled man..Then bang..Pernell just ends it with a short left...Lampley (I think) says around the 6 count "Not gonna make it" and Nazario didnt...I was actually a little disappointed cause I was expecting more of a show but it showed Pea could be brutal when it was called upon. That was a pretty impressive peformance...My favourite "proper" Sweet Pea fights are probably McGirt 2, Nelson, Haugan and to be honest Chavez.
Whitaker's at his absolute sharpest against Nelson, Haugen and Ramirez in the rematch. He was on cheat mode right there and no one was going to touch him, let alone give him a fight.
