A very odd end to the Arreola-Whitherspoon fight. Whitherspoon who had just been knockdowned at the end of the round was disqualified because one of his cornermen got onto the ring before the round was officially over. ( Apparently even though the bell had sounded the round doesn't end if one of the fighters is being counted down ) Yeah Whitherspoon's corner broke the rules. But it's not like their actions helped their fighter. It's not like they ran over and helped him stand back up. It would have been a major scandal if it had been Arreola's corner that had accidentally done this. ( As Whitherspoon was losing badly at this point ) I would have thought that a warning or a point deduction could have sufficed. So the question comes... Was the ref's hands tied? Was this an automatic no-choice disqualification? I suppose it doesn't matter much as Whitherspoon had very little left, but it did rob Arreola of another tally mark in his knockout total.
It was a bizarre turn of events. But I tend to think he should have been given the chance...personally, I thought the round was over before he fell anyhow. I would have gotten on the mat too.
It was a stupid decision, as I believe they put the chair in when the bell sounded (the 1st time) as Chazz went down. They didn't go over to the fighter until the count was done and the bell rang again. ****ing ******ed DQ. Robbed the fans.
The ref was the worst I had ever seen. He looked like he just came out of the movie Deliverance and when asked questions from Kellerman he could barely even put words together I was laughing when I was listening.
to me the ref finished the count and it kind of seemed he was going to continue the round after the bell rang i think that was the reason of the corner coming in that ref had no clue of wether the bell rang thats how come it rang a second time to let him aware that it already did ring.
Because it was explained the ref had already stopped the action of the fight to allow floyd time to recover from a foul.. At this point it is at ref discretion to disqualify a fighter , if one of his corner men steps up on the apron.. Example of a instant disqualification Unlike the situation in the past, for example Meldrick vs Chavez , when Lou Duva jumped up on the apron after Meldrick was knocked down with only 10 second left on the clock , which is a instant disqualification . even if meldric had responded to steel question and given the ok to continue , he still would have been disqualified because of Lou's actions. In the Whitherspoon fight , The rules where a "fighter can not be saved by the bell", since Whitherspoon was knocked down at the bell the round was not officially over until the ref has finished administering the knock down count and has officially declared the round over, Chazz corner had jumped on the apron during the count , thus disqualify Chazz instantly since the round was not officially over ..
To be fair though, while i did think it was a bit strange to make that call...it was a sensible call that could have been done either way. Some have compared it to Mayweather-Judah...and maybe we forget that a lot of people called for PBF to be disqualified in that fight.
Witherspoon would've probably have gotten stopped soon as he was taking a ton of power shots in there. But still, I would have liked to have seen the fighters win/lose the fight themselves. Not too mention it wasn't a bad fight up to that point, both guys were standing and trading.
I was at that fight, and the truth be told that is was alot of black people there. tHEY DIDN'T WANT PEOPLE IN THE CROWD FIGHTING, PARKING LOT, AND OTHER PLACES IN THE BUILDING.
