Willie Pep highlight.

I just don't see how they were more versatile than Willie Pep offensively or about as good defensively.

I respect McFarland and Driscoll a lot and I'm aware that these are only short films which very little can be based on but from what I see, they weren't quite as good as Pep was. This is only my opinion of course.

I do think that with the rules of their day they had to fight differently and using as much footwork as Pep did for over 20 rounds may not have been possible.

Benny Leonard was incredible and could reasonably be rated ahead of Pep. I'd say they are about even in terms of greatness.

 

Maybe not in terms of footwork, but Griffo had great head movement, something shared with Locche and Pep.

 

Based on his performance, I would put Pep in the top ten of all time.

 

Both McFarland and Driscoll on what little film is available show better offensive work than anything I've seen from Pep. Driscoll's jab was better than Pep's, and he was more offensive-minded in general than Pep. McFarland shows what Pep was incapable of doing ever - showing excellent defensive skills while pressuring the opponent non-stop, they are not really comparable offensive-wise, Packey was much-much better than Pep in that regard, while being about as invincible.

I don't see anything about Pep where he would be superior to Benny Leonard, whether it is technique or achievements, Benny was even better in certain points than Pep.

I know Pep was not in his prime but he looked great, in my opinion.

Miguel Canto for me is the fighter whose style most resembles Pep.

I dont see any of them with the footwork of Pep or the hand speed and none of them are fighting Sandy Sadler either.....Benny Leonard was a master and one of the top 3 at lightweight but Pep is hard to match

 

I don't need the youtube to watch it, I have that one recorded from French version of ESPN Classics at excellent quality. Chavez just didn't have the handspeed and the timing to cause Pep trouble. You can see tens of situations where Pep is too open at mid-range, but Chavez is unable to follow up the advantages, he doesn't know how to throw punches from unusual angles or straight punches.

 

i dont think he invented his defense i think he had learnt the moves of them guys but he peiced all of their moves together brillaintly and had amazing movement. His offense is probably as good as all of them (maybe not benny leanard thoguh)
