I still think even without accidental headbutts Sanders would have won but Wlad his chin is a bit underrated even if it is just an "average" chin.
But hey, I can make excuses for everyone why they lost.

And again, I'm not trying to prove Wlad has an iron chin (which he hasn't)
Nor am I trying to say Sanders was cheating on purpose.
Nor am I trying to say Sanders his win over Wladimir isn't a great win.

All I'm trying to say is that you can make excuses for every loss why somebody lost at that moment and give some sort of proof, be it Ali, Foreman or Wlad.

I don't even know why I typed this.

I think however strong wlads chin was then is how strong it is now.

It certainly is, maybe a tiny bit weaker because he's older now.

I think that his mental ability to absorb punishment has increased, and that is an important component of durability.

Jack Dempsey got more out of his chin than he ever should have, because of his mental ability to cope with being hurt.

Wlad is more confident now but I believe were he to be caught by those same shots he would still be knocked out.

I won't lie to ya, the more I see Jack destroy the slower giant in Willard the more I believe in his abilities.

For me it comes down to this, if he can slip the jab he can beat Wlad. He only needs to do it once as Brewster showed. So does Dempsey have head movement of say a Brewster or a Frazier. A head movement where a lot of jabs get eaten but when that one is slipped a left hook can explode on the defenceless Wlad and finish him.

If someone can convince me of that I'm changing sides.

    1. Slipping 1 of the fastest best jabs ever is a damn site harder than slipping a 37yo semi retired ex farmers jab, even if he was tall.

    2. You're assuming Wlad would be taken out with 1 punch, this hasn't ever happened. Dempsey also has something like 2 1 punch KO's

    3. When you step over to the left to throw the left hook you expose yourself to counter right hands and left hooks yourself. We saw Dempsey get knocked out the ring by the clumsy Firpo's right hand. 1 counter right hand or left hook of Wlad's could KO Dempsey. I don't think he'd take the weight of the punch too well at all

    1) much more difficult than Willard I agree. Willard shows us the argument "he's too small" is invalid so it is an issue of style and technique.

    2) despite it not being a 1 punch ko, greater effectively stopped wlad with one left hook to the body.

    3) I agree completely which is why I'm asking if jack has the ability to do that because if he fails, as you say it's not gonna end well for him.

dempsey was fearless, tenacious and vicious...but would he be the same after getting hit repeatedly by poleaxe jabs? jabs that have nearly the power of many right hands?

dempsey would slip the jab sure...and get held inside. the fight would reset and restart until wlad got the timing and distance. by the third round, it's a goddamn jab fest.

hesistant as he is, wlad would FINALLY open up in the 6th to score a knockdown off a right hand as dempsey comes in.

it's more of the same for a UD over 12/15

    1. Size is only as good as the skill functioning it. Otherwise beating the 7'2 Long would mean you could hand with Wlad

I'd actually say Wlad's skills are arguably better than Tunney's

    2. Brewster is a 230lb man with shedloads of muscle, Dempsey is 190lbs and not very muscular. So Brewster had allot more torque behind his blows. That's partly an era thing though, maybe modern Dempsey would be much more muscular and powerful. Or maybe he'd just be a LHW as he once was

Personally and I know you disagree but I think Wlad was overly tense and burned himself out

I don't mean beating willard = beating wlad. I just mean due to beating Willard you can't say "Dempsey is too small" you have to argue stylistically.

I actually agree atm, I think Wlad is a much better boxer than dempsey but if anyone can show me he has the ability to get past that jab I might swing the other way - I did pick Wlad to win by ko.

You could be right and I think it will always be a debatable issue but from what I see Wlad kicked the **** out of him until that one left hook landed to the body and from then on he was no more than a punch bag, it reminded me of the famous left hook Ward through to Gatti's liver, but Gatti had the durability to survive the shots Ward unloaded, Wlad doesn't have that durability.

tough fight for both men,Dempsey hard fisted and fast and always dangerous and he could get to Vlad early. Vlad big man with skill and movement. Both men could fight for 12 rounds.

Dempsey could get to the younger version of Vlad by KO, but the present version, cautious and careful could take Jack the full route or catch him. Pace of the fight would be a factor and Dempsey a very dangerous opponent for Vlad because he has the kind of power to turn things around with one punch and killer instinct

The fact that Dempsey goes into the Willard fight swinging from the fences like some tough man competitor somehow convinces people here that he has a chance against a modern, refined, boxing robot who operates an almost seamless safety first approach that has carried him through 15 or so title fights, stopping 11 of his opponents while the balance of proof for Dempsey is stumble bums like Firpo, former flyweights like Carpentier and the infirmed like Miske.

    Bravo, Classicists. Bravo.
