Not too often. Didn't know that was his name. Still, Ali was as big as any man needs to be to beat the crap out of any other man. And then some. And he was kinda fast, too. And kinda tough. How's that for expert analysis.
I think it mostly have to do with coming in low and lessening the effect of his jab. Especially Norton and Frazier were very good in defending against Ali's jab. Terrell, Bugner, Liston and Foreman all had longer reach than Ali and very good/great jabs, but he outjabbed and outboxed them all. Lewis also tried to use his reach, but, as Duodenom stated, Ali got past that also.
seriously, nothing but trouble will come from this thread.... Seriously, Ali has heart advantages, footwork, hand speed, ring generalship, and the better chin/durability. Wlad is the bigger man and he hits harder. The frank guy is biased anyway, I've seen him a few times going on about Wlad and vitali beating up on Ali, which will NEVER EVER HAPPEN. And yeah, Ali's losses are really against guys who are up in his face and pressure him, guys who don't give him any space to use his reach and incredible jab. Wlad is not that kind of fighter. Neither is Vitali. Just look at Ali's losses when he was still a credible fighter. I am not talking about the berbick and holmes loses. No because his speed and accuracy are so good. And since he's dealt with so much more speed than Wlad he will see everything Wlad throws. The power is there, but once you see it Ali's chin can handle that. I'll say style wise he has some trouble. It could be an 9-6/10-5 type decision. Ali controls the action though. Ali would absolutely embarrass his brother. Ali might look like Pac does against the bigger stationary fighters. He wouldn't hit as hard P4P but he's probably got even more speed, and he has more length than Pac does. Lastly, I think Ali does go to the body more when he deals with a taller man. He did a bit in the Terrell fight. I think Terrel was legit 6'5+ Either way, that's more than enough to show how he does with a taller man. Wlad's probably got 1/2 inch, maybe an inch on Terrel. The slowness and lack of fluidity only makes Wlad look worse. But Wlad's technical ability, and power will keep Ali in check a little. Tough fight, but Ali wins.
For the picture of Terrell and Ali at the weigh in, it's amazing how no one has noted that Ali is still standing on the scales. So even with that boost of about one or two inches, Ali is still shorter than Terrell by an inch or so. I don't follow American prospects (relatively new to boxing), but I'm pretty sure that a recent heavyweight is weighing 217~ while standing at 6'7. To me, that makes 6'6 hardly seem so ludicrous, especially when fighters were fighting more frequently and were forced to stay in good shape for longer. As for styles, there's nothing in Ali's record to suggest that he was intimidated by size or punching power and both have an 81" reach. So physically, the only advantage I see for Wlad is if he muscles Ali around. I look at the 11th round of Ali-Norton II in particular. Ali looked damned frustrated when he was caught in the corner and Norton used his much more muscular build to throw Ali back into the corner when he tried to get out. So basically, the only way I see size working in Wlad's favor is if he stalks Ali and basically manhandles him. Which Wlad frankly doesn't do. Even when he was going for the kill, Chambers was still able to evade him for the better of it. I think it's delusional to say that Ali couldn't make Wlad look foolish with his foot movement. I'm torn on which brother would do better against Ali, but frankly, I don't see a fight plan where either one can beat Ali. Too fast, too smart, too durable, too versatile.
You could argue Wlad. Kenny Norton beat Ali 2-1 on fair score cards, and out boxed him / hurt him. I do not think there is a big difference between Norton and Wlad's chin, but Wlad is bigger and hits harder. The rounds of this fight mean a lot for Ali. The longer, the better.
In the third Norton fight, Ali was going downhill rapidly. The first fight he fought 10 rounds with a broken jaw. He clearly won the 2nd fight, and the 3rd fight was very close even though Ali was looking very old by that stage. I don't think it matters whether the fight is over 12 or 15, Ali would toy with that robotic style 10 times out of 10. The mental battle would play a part too, WALDO is fragile, Ali was anything but.
