Whether they fought a lot of past prime greats or were somehow just in the right place at the right time, what mediocre or bad fighters managed to have great resumes? 24-24 Randy Sandy is all but forgotten now, but he managed wins over a 13-0 Emile Griffith, a early career Dick Tiger, 76-5 Lee Sala, and a few other solid fighters. Now obviously he wasn't a terrible fighter, but compared to Griffith and Tiger he may as well of been one. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Brian Nielsen feasted on the corpses of a lot of 80's fighters. Orlin Norris, Tim Witherspoon, Larry Holmes, Mike Hunter, Phil Jackson, Carlos De Leon, Tony Tubbs... I've always argued that Nielsen was through and through decent and not a terrible, terrible fighter. Mediocre with a few small assets rather then the universal joke he's considered. But compared to a lot of the fighters he beat?
There was a fringe contender from around the early '50s, named Don Williams, who had a number of wins over HOFers - Ike Williams, Sammy Angott, I believe Bob Montgomery and Lew Jenkins (not sure), and other good fighters. Also lost a close, hard-fought split decision to a prime Kid Gavilan in a non-title fight.
From everything I've seen Don Cockell was a pretty **** fighter. Through and through underwhelming. Managed a back injury TKO over Harry Kid Mathews. Beat LaStarza right after Marciano ruined him. Beat a ancient Tommy Farr in Farr's last ever fight. Beat Lloyd Marhsall, once via a DQ and then stopped him when he was a dead man walking, right before Bobo Olsen and Harry Mathew's blew him out too.
Cliff Couser is a damned good mention here. Monte Barret, Quick Tillis, Jorge Luis Gonzalez, and Everett Martin. Definitely all far better then him as fighters.
No, from what I have been told, he does not deserve to be on the thread. The old man goes on and on about him, he was quite a special fighter who we got to see over here (Britain), and of course got a bit of publicity because of his name, which of course being American, went right over his head!
I'm not saying he's terrible, but compared to legitimate greats like Griffith and Tiger... Well, the talent gap is massive.
Well actually: Dick Tiger was god awful when he first came over here, few would of ever thought he would go on and do what he did after going 0-4 against British Journeymen after his debut in the country.....
Arturo Leon wound up 25-29, but has a win over Chacon, Jimmy Heair back when he was still highly rated.
Jorge Vaca's a good shout out. Could whack but had a brittle chin. Still managed to beat Mark Breland, Lloyd Honeyghan, Pipino Cuevas
Ralph 'Tiger' Jones had wins over Sugar Ray Robinson, Kid Gavilan and Joey Giardello, three hall of famers. He also beat solid contenders such as Johnny Bratton, Bobby Dykes, Charles Humez, Danny Womber, Chico Vejar, Rory Calhoun... He wasn't bad by any means and gave most of the men he fought a tough fight but I wouldn't call him a great either, just a very exciting, tough guy.
