He was definitely rough. If he fouled, then he should be penalized. Many fighters will go as far as the ref will let them go...i.e. Pedroza.
I think so. Not even so much for the fouling, but also most modern refs and commissions would be unwilling to let him take the kind of damage he took. The second Ezzard Charles fight for example might well have been stopped these days.
How many times did Marciano take enough damage to likely warrant a stoppage even in a modern title fight? Probably just the Charles rematch. But it would've been an easy technical decision win for Marciano, since the cut was almost certainly the result of an elbow.
He would have been DSQD in the UK if he had fought Cockell here ,he butted him ,hit him twice after the bell ,and once when he was down .The US press came down on him for his tactics,not just us English.So Marciano would have to modify his style a bit I think ,,I dont think he was intentionally dirty ,but he was close to the wind a few times,watch his last punch against Walcott in their first fight ,Walcott is out and has his knees on the floor,when Rocky throws a glancing left hook.
The Cockell fight was just other Marciano type of fight. Yes there was that hit butt, and the hit after the bell(He did nail Charles after the bell also) Marciano also had the punch going when Cockell was down. That fight had very few fouls compare to the LarSarza rematch.
Im not suggesting that Cockell would have won without the fouls,but they sure didnt help.,Peter Wilson ,the top uk Boxing writer asked Rocky about the fouls ,he denied the vehemently ,until he watched the film,charming outside the ring ,inside ,look out!
Sure, but he would have tailored his tactics to the rule set. His oponents would also have had to cut back on their fouls which would also have hurt them. Bob Fitzsimmons fought with 4oz gloves but he also had to take punches from 4oz gloves. Both fighters get the pros and cons of the rule set.
People may get onto Rocky MArciano for fouls, but seem to "Forget"" that Walcott did his fair share of fouls in the first fight. One time I counted 5 rabbit punchs in a row in a clich, on the part of Walcott.
Rocky Marciano was far more scary than Mike Tyson. Outside the ring he helped old ladies across the road, recycled his cans and was meticulously polite to his opponents. Once the bell rang he had no concept of human empathy. He would kill you as casualy as you might swat a fly.
His young brother Sonny said they were sparring once when he got a bit ambitious and landed a good one ,Rocky,s tongue came out ,[the sign that he was mad ],and he saw the "red mist",Sonny had to grab him and shout "Rock Rock ,it's me Sonny ,your brother" scary aint the word for that man!
Whats also rember is that Marciano thown so many punchings, that a few were bound to be off the mark. If one thown 87 or so punchings a round, a few will end up being foul.
probably would depend on the ref. Not like Holy wasn't above a headbutt or two or the tendency for many of the bigger fighters to lean on their opponents and not have it broken up by the ref. I would say that Rocky would be fine under modern rule sets. First times always a warning anyway.
