You can restore boxing

Good thread JG and the article absolutely right when it says that the only way for us to change the sport is to unite as a fan base.

I did float the idea of a "global boxing fan union" a couple of years ago and with the power of social media that is even more feasible today than it was back then.

 

I agree wholeheartedly, and it all sounds great, but I think corruption and greed has done irreparable damage to the sport.

Too many fighters like the idea of being a "champion" and having that belt slung over their shoulder. There are also too many casual fans who don't give a **** and just want to see a fight.

It's impossible to get everyone on board and doing the same thing at the same time. Impossible. There is no governing body or organization that oversees the sport, so it's just a mess of corruption and lowlifes who see an opportunity to make some money.

 

Boxing isn't dying.. It will always survive..

But rarely does it do itself any favours.

What do we do?

 

Good article. I am careful where I spend my PPV and ticket money, even going out of my way to support a good card when it is inconvenient. If more fans buy tickets to good fights and stop buying bad PPVs (May/JMM, Pac/Clottey) the tide will turn.

"Disempowering those responsible for creating the confusion in which they alone thrive is a duty for everyone who loves the Sweet Science" is a powerful line that needs addressing.

 

1. Leave a comment at the end of that article supporting it. You can bet that the powers-that-be will get wind of it and will look at those comments. They need to see that we've had enough of the nonsense.

2. Make it known that you won't have any more talk of alphabet belts. Let them hear it in comment sections at HBO, Showtime, ESPN, etc. Those belts are no more meaningful than red suspenders. Boxing demands the presence of one champion in every division. The rest are pretenders.

3. When you hear of an international rankings panel being created that is...
Internationally-represented
Independent -w/ no members tied into promoters/sanctioning bodies
Respected/Knowledgable

and that is willing to commit to publishing objective monthly rankings, check it out to make sure it is legit (or contact watchdogs like John Garfield or Springs Toledo)... and support it. Loudly.
