There isn't something like "Jab speed" you can train. You can train hand speed so the speed of your jabs will improve automatically.

Decent exercises to improve hand and punching speed are
    - Band push ups (band in front of your chest, not behind the back!)
    - Drop down plyo push up
    - Reactive Throws with Medicine Balls

Also use basic exercises like Floor Press. Important is to try to move the weight as fast as you can (it shouldn't be too heavy). Not too many reps per set. 7 sets, 3 reps , 30 sec rest.

That bit about the elbow at the start is brilliant. I am going to steal that.
And you are spot on, reducing tension is the key.

I think you might be doing something wrong technically - its v/hard to say.

BTW....this sub-forum doesn't get much traffic. Maybe you should start a thread in General (most traffic?).

use your jab more...........dont do any strength training....just learn how to throw every kinda jab there is and throw it as fast as you can at the bag and sometimes as hard as you can. Years of practice and it will get better. Do abs and core. Any strength training will tighten tendons and actually slow you down. You need loose tendons.

If your form is good then the way to improve speed is to make sure the muscles are relaxed. If you are relaxed with good form your shots should be good speed and powerful enough. Then it comes down to endurance so my advice would be rounds dedicated purely to jabbing on the heavy bag and double end bag the endurance will maintain the speed thoughout the fight
