Ingemar Johansson, 1958 vs Frank Bruno, 1986, who wins and why?

Actually no .. his best efforts were rebounding to KO Witherspoon in one round , KOing from world champ Mike Weaver in one round along with a courageous fight against Holmes and KOing Bruno .. so he koed three former heavyweight champs and gave an all time great, Holmes, a hell of a fight ... not bad.

 

The Spitting Image Annual, included a cardboard model of Bruno, with his head torso and limbs as separate parts.

The explanation was:

"Oh dear, Frank Bruno seems to have been dismantled by Mike Tyson. Please reassemble the champion, in time for his next great defeat!"

That is how the British public saw Bruno!

They did not spend a lot of time, arguing over whether he would have beaten Johansen!

 

Bruno was useless but I still give him a decent chance againt Johansson, if only because I consider Johansson's chin somewhat suspect too.

 

We need some Smith and Witherspoon threads.

They would pose equally interesting problems!

 

Mostly because Ingo was essentially KO'ed by the legendary Brian London in his last fight .. literally carried to his corner at the bell ..

 

Good post mate. Just remember Coetzee had chronic hand surgery in 76 and didn't look back. Also doctors assured him that the surgery after the Dokes bout would not affect his right hand power.

 

No-one said optimum. The point is either going right over your head or you don't want to concede it.

Jan, your mental gymnastics are excellent three points! But being overweight (Not obese) and in optimal condition are sometimes one in the same. sometimes a fighter performs better with excess weight. Others are not so much the same every human is unique. You can still be in “Good” condition whilst overweight as Thomas pointed out, no one said it was optimal.

 

I'm not surpised.

 

Yeah, I don’t have time to watch a mediocre fight 25 times I’d much rather watch actual good boxing.

 

And for all that, he gave both Tyson and Lewis a better fight, than Ingo (and Patterson for that matter much as it pains me to say) would ever muster.
