He was a very tough style for Canelo to overcome and I actually thought he'd beat Canelo on points. I wouldn't say it exposes Canelo as a hype job though, you yourself predicted BJS would give Canelo problems before the fight as well. And Canelo did win the fight, by stoppage, so if anything he ha sproven he can beat someone as slick and elusive as BJS.
@One2The44 the difference is that he was able to cross the line and get his weight to his back foot before bringing it into his opponent, back to the front foot. This doesn't work if your head leaves the line, as you have to move back onto it first. BJS telegraphed his shot and got pull countered.
I had Saunders 5-3 up at the point of the stoppage - could have been 4-4 or 6-2 as there were a couple of very close rounds.
Wow - just seen the judges scorecards. What fight were they watching? Or should I say...how much they were paid for them.
I had him taking 2 or 3 rounds. He had some good moments and one really good round, but the power difference was the main thing. BJS would pitter patter a bit and then Canelo would blast him with a heavy body shot and Saunders would look visibly shaken. Had it carried on past the 8th I think Saunders would have been put on the canvas and stopped.
I had Saunders up. I thought he was starting to really up his combinations and Canelo looks stagnant. But as all champions do Canelo dug deep and finished it. He planned for that shot and was going for it all night. Saunders didn’t adjust and that’s why he lost. You can outbox your opponent but when you cannot adjust or see his traps he can still get the win. Canelo is just too good right now. Saunders did good considering how inactive he had been. Good effort but he looked better when he was more active previously.
No. Just no. Canelo was ahead by a round or maybe 2 at the time BJ quit like a *****. Saunders has no business being in the ring with Alvarez as was amply demonstrated. You're delusional . Canelo needs to fight Bivol and Beterbiev. I'd pick him in both fights.
I had BJS up too, but I never thought that mattered. Canelo had one objective and it clearly went to plan. Throughout the fight Canelo was landing the more damaging punches that accumulate, until it doesn't work it doesn't really matter who was outpointing him. I had Khan outpointing him too, again, it didn't matter.
I had Canelo just ahead after eight rounds. Saunders did quite well in rounds 4-6 but it was no masterclass. He was a bit too cautious and reactive for me in the first three. Canelo got close enough to land some good body shots which might well have told down the stretch had we got there. There had been a couple of close rounds so I could see how someone might have had Saunders with a very narrow lead, but even if he'd somehow continued after the eighth it was only going to be one-way traffic from then. I don't know why some seem surprised that Saunders had a couple of decent moments or that Canelo lost some rounds. Canelo often gets made to look ordinary, or at least has some problems, with fighters of a similar ilk. This fight didn't really tell us anything new about him, and I view him precisely the same afterwards as I did beforehand. A good fighter, but as 'pound for pound number ones' go he's as beatable as they come and is never likely to set the fight alight or really stun you with his brilliance.
The fight was about even and Saunders was looking good just before he got caught. But it's no good being good over 6 or 8 rounds only, in a 12 round fight. It means nothing. Canelo effectively took him out with one punch. That's what champs do sometimes with crafty opponents.
