I was talking to a buddy the other week about how nice it would be to be a groomed boxer. A boxer being brought along by the establishment to build them into a name. At the time I used Miller as an example. In terms of employment, think of Millers job. Hes been fed relative no hopers for years, fights he wasnt in any real danger of taking much punishment in, let alone losing, he doesnt have to make a weight.... he just trains and shows up to beat on the guy they put in front of him and then cashes his checks. Repeat that cycle until he gets fed to one of the top guys and will now be taking home $5,000,000 give or take, for a couple weeks camp and getting beat up for a dozen minutes. or Golovkin. Think of being Golovkin coming up. You are very very rarely given a good fight.... most of the guys you fight are outclassed and outmatched. And you become an internationally known millionaire. I was reminded of this today when Mikey said this was the first time he felt hes been in a fight. A multi division champion whose made millions of dollars and this is the first time hes actually felt hes been in a fight lol. If you could get on the good side of boxings establishment and actually get groomed to the top, I do view that as a pretty sweet gig. The problem is, is 99% of the fighters are on the outside of the establishment, dont get groomed, and have the hardest job in the world lol. .... * When I say hardest job in the world, I obviously know there are harder jobs.... Im generalizing.
Good point. I was actually thinking the same about Miller, he’s had easy fights and taken little punishment without having to make weight and is now fighting for millions. That’s life though isn’t it? Luck and timing, meeting the people who will put you in those positions and get you the breaks you need. As you say, it doesn’t happen to that many and most fighters have to go through hell to make a serious amount of money - most of them don’t.
The other part is that Miller and Mikey Garcia can each beat 99% of professional boxers on the planet in their weightclass.
This. He’s forgetting all of the years of hard work to make yourself into a fighter that’s even worth somebody putting their money behind you. Miller spent many years training and competing as a kickboxer and even made a name for himself before ever turning to boxing. Also, there are a lot of off camera things that fighters have to do, so that money certainly isn’t coming easy.
Golovkin? That man has trained boxing since 9 years old and workout 6 hours every day. He has sacrifaced a lot and dedicated his life to be olympian and professional fighter. Thats not easy, its hard work.
Oh boxing is brutal and hard! But, my view so is life in general for the working man. These guys are doing what they love and have been blessed to make a profit in such a dirty business that is boxing. I mean when you get up and have to work 40 plus hours a week to take care of your family in just a 9-5 job it is brutal in itself. Never ends till the day you die. Atleast these guys are doing what they love to do! Of course, you'd say its risky and it is, but buddy life in general is a gamble and can throw a curve ball at you anytime!
You mean Jarell Miller? He WAS a no hoper for years. The problem with this is that even when you are in the ring with no-hopers, your job is being punched in the face. 99% of us just aren't made for that.
I dont think Miller can beat 99% of heavyweights. Not even close. Garcia could do that to his division but that doesn't really detract from my point.
Im talking his professional career. If you think working out 6 hours a day to be a millionaire that beats up overmatched opponents is really really hard work in comparison to actual hard work around the world... then idk. Ive seen people with hard, rough jobs before, that come with no money, no prestige, and are harder than working out in a gym. They wake up to go get drained every day at brutal jobs day in and day out for 20 something years and they dont get a fraction of the compensation or the after fight vacation that fighters get after every fight. I think boxing fans dont seem to have very good perspectives sometimes on how hard a life being a groomed boxer is or how hard a laberor in the real world has it.
i would take working out in a gym over pouring 80 lb buckets of melted tar on a roof, in 103% weather, for a living. ive tried both. kids, stay in school.
Sports are easy jobs except combat sports. If you have the talent to play a sport professionally, who's choosing something else? No one. Now with combat sports it's like, yeah I don't know about getting my brain rattled for a living.
It's only easy if you are physically talented and/or fed horrible fighters until you run into the guy who destroys your body, mind and future career. Fortunately for all the boxers out there there is not 1 fighter that can deliver that damage so they should be happy. and yes boxing is one of the hardest things to do in the world because you are forcing yourself to do something that the human body is built to not do which is to willingly go and fight someone. It goes against survival.
