    For sure. It was shocking. We had seen Sanchez beat him, but that was different.

    Azumah Nelson had genuine X-rated power to complement his boxing skills and ruggedness.

    Wilfredo Gomez is an all time great arguably the best ever at Super Bantamweight. What I love about Gomez is he did not **** around always sought to fight the best foes.

    I have never been a Gomez guy but of course respected him. Nelson to me is like McCallum, an all-time great fighter too often underrated by many these days .. Nelson was a beast, tough as nails, could box , had an iron chin and terrific stamina to go with his power .. the man had to go to two at the time dominant world champion's hometowns to fight for and win his title ... both were brutal victories .. even as a mere novice he gave the exceptional Sanchez a very challenging fight ... he was something ..

    Gomez was obviously past his peak but that KO by Nelson was devastating. Gomez should never have fought again after that.

    Nelson is one of my all-time faves. Amazing fighting spirit, such purpose, to go with the skills and athleticism. We he smelled blood in the water, turning the tide was almost impossible.

    Nelson could walk into a bar full of NFL offensive linemen...and kick all their asses, one at a time or all at once.

    Not sure he was past his peak because at that stage he had only ever lost one fight to the great Sanchez at an earlier attempt to take the WBC Featherweight title which he then subsequently won. In fact after Nelson beat him in this manner he was still good enough to go up another division to win the world Super Featherweight title. One thing is clear he was as unbeatable as you get at Super Bantamweight. I remember him beating my country man Eddie Ndukwu at Featherweight before Sanchez. To put it into proper context we had really high hopes for Eddie Ndukwu who was a reigning African Boxing Union and Commonwealth Featherweight title holder who had beaten former world featherweight champion David Poison Kotey. Oh boy, boy o boy he gave Eddie a terribly bad beating. Poor Eddie was never the same.

    Azumah Nelson gave then WBC World Featherweight Champion Salvador Sanchez a rough go of it on the night of July 21 1982 in Madison Square Garden until round 15, when he stopped Nelson, Sanchez even scored a knockdown in round 7. Salvador had a much easier time with then WBC World Super Bantamweight Champion on August 21 1981, in Las Vegas, Nevada, stopping an overmatched Gomez in the 8 the round. Sanchez met an untimely death on August 12 1982, the result of an auto accident, after just 9 title defenses. Wilfredo would go on to defeat Juan La Porte for the WBC World Featherweight Title, only to lose it to Azumah Nelson. It would have been interesting to see Gomez fight future WBA World Featherweight Champion Barry McGuigan.
