How come Sugar Ray Leonard didn't force Hagler into a catchweight?

Leonard ask for bigger gloves because his hands got bigger as he got older, he could no longer fit his growing hands into the smaller gloves that he used in the past.

I agree with you . It was not a mismatch. It was fair and Ray won the fight. Ray did not fight the best Hagler, but he did fight Hagler who was champion and won.

You just shot yourself in the foot with the last sentence. I bet you were okay with Leonard forcing Lalonde to come down which I believe to be the most shameful thing he has done his career. Ray may have been great and with his earlier victories its much easier to forgive him for his actions later in his career, but the bit of uncertainty he had with certain fighters toward thd end of his career and the way he approached it somewhat echos Floyd's greater insecurity with beating other opponents when they're at their best. Floyd keeps yapping his mouth, but he has made himself look like a bullshitter with the catchweight

Excellent observations. I agree Marvin took some big shots from Hearns and it was amazing he even was able to stand up after. One thing is for sure, he was on the decline and Leonard caught him when he was vulnerable

I don't see how I shot myself in the foot because although I was happy to see Leonard get another belt, as I got older I realized that getting a genuine LHW to come down to 168 was not the proper way to go about it.
I just think shameful is far too harsh of a description.
I know it was still the early days of 168 getting some attention but I don't think Ray can genuinely call himself a champion at 175.

But shameful? Too much for me,and I've never hidden the fact that we're talking about my alltime #1 here.

Why are you parroting **** that you've just read off of Wikipedia? And I know you got it from Wikipedia because you won't find another credible source to verify Leonard-Hagler competing in a 24x24 ring and using 12 oz gloves. And no, heavyweights do not use 12 oz gloves; they use 10 oz gloves, as all fighters above 147 do.

Mayweather and Alvarez will be using 10 oz gloves because that's the standard for fighters competing at that weight class. Mayweather wanted 8 oz gloves against Cotto but didn't get them.

When Mike Trainer suggested the possibility of Hagler meeting Leonard at 154 or 155 prior to Leonard injuring his eye, Hagler and his team told them there wasn't any chance of it happening, and that if Leonard wanted it, he'd have to come up to his weight.

Another clueless newb that doesn't have an ounce of knowledge of this sport that dates back beyond the last five years. The WBC - the only sanctioning body willing to sanction the Hagler-Leonard fight as a title bout - had completely cut out fifteen round fights after the Mancini-Kim fight. Three of Hagler's previous four fights had been scheduled for twelve rounds.
