You obviously were not watching boxing at that time. Lewis' victory over Tyson was not impressive at all. The fight was a joke. Regardless of their years of birth, Tyson had way less left in the tank than Lennox Lewis. Tyson peaked very early as a fighter, and Lewis peaked late. Shortly after the Lewis fight, Tyson lost to Danny Williams and Danny McBride. Two fighters who would never have seen the third round against Tyson. I don't blame Lewis for taking the fight as it looks good on paper and got him big money (since Tyson was always a much bigger draw than Lewis). But, even Lennox knows that he was only fighting a shell of Mike Tyson at that point. Manny Steward sure did.

Tyson was going through the motions with Lewis even when he threatened to eat his children. That was pro wrestling 101. I think Lewis would have been more threatened if Tyson had been a serious contender up to that point. Or actually had children.

Always found it fascinating that 20 something years later he refuses to think george was actually getting to him/setting up punches and dismisses it as a fluke.

You can't possibly have 10 fighters ahead of Tyson. He's solid Top 10 ATG Heavyweight. His heart is grossly underrated anybody who went through what he went through and hasn't offed himself has way more character than you think.

I have him ahead of both Lewis and Holyfield.

Bert Sugar actually picked Spinks to beat Tyson. So did Muhammad Ali. Incidentally it was Teddy Atlas that said Spinks would frustrate him and make him quit. As I recall Tyson's personal life was spinning out of control at the time; he was in the news and tabloids for more than just boxing. Many people speculated that it would be a distraction that Spinks can capitalize on. In 91 Seconds they were proven wrong.

How about this Holmes at 42 vs Ali at 38?

Some fighters age better, its not a reflection of their peak talent; Lennox with his size and style has a body built for longevity. Tyson with his short arms and stature requires youth to effectively pull of his style, which frankly he never adjusted to factor in his age quite possibly because he couldn't.

Not directed at me, but of course you can find decent arguments for having 10 HWs ahead of Mike. Ali, Louis, Holmes, Lewis, Wlad, Holy, Frazier, Marciano, Johnson, Foreman, Liston, Jeffries... Not saying that I think all of them are ahead of Tyson, but you can argue 10 of them without it at all being outrageous, whether you agree or not.

@ironchamp is an obvious big fan of Mike's, and I completely respect that (I feel that way about Holmes).

I don't think it's a bad argument to say there are ten ahead of Mike, especially Holyfield and Lewis, but that's just one opinion.

I just live and let live, have fun and enjoy talking about boxing.

It's definitely subjective but there are some fighters who are objectively ranked ahead of others. For instance, Louis, Ali are head and shoulders above the rest of the group.

But of the names mentioned? Ranking Jeffries and Liston ahead of Tyson would be fairly charitable.
I think it's fair to say that there was always that one fighter that brought all of us to the sport for some reason or another.

I agree, but you could a make a case that they weren't defeated in their primes. It's not an easy sell imo, but not ludicrous either.

I like Atlas & find his analogies funny, sometimes accurate. 'we are firemen' analogy for Bradley!
My fav was his treatment on Michael Moorer, comical IMO. Worst? when he tried to give some advice I think...to the New York Jets? they finished the season worse than the previous year!

Naw, I take that back. It was Atlas checking the hell out of the judges on ESPN fights that's my fav Atlas moment. He was a loose cannon that night!

Tyson's induction drew the largest crowd I've seen at the IBHOF (Canastota). And I've been to a few. In fact Rocky Grazi's pub even had a life sized statue made for him...but I don't think he went in to see it.

But it was a star studded year JCC was inducted as well as Rocky Balboa ! LMAO!

The HOF building in Canastota is tiny but the induction stage and open field are huge. Did Mike get the most cheers in 2011?

    2nd.

Balboa was 1st.:applaudit: I kid you not. At the Saturday Banquet, as fighters walk on stage, they sat waiting for each other to come on & maybe would turn around to shake each's hand.

Then one Sylvester Stallone walks up...and boxers one by one would stand & stop him as he walks by!! LMAO!
Joe Cortez raised his hand. Haglar put his hand on his heart, Sergio Martinez, Mike they all wanted pictures with him, it was the funniest thing.

If I can find my recording maybe I will post it here. Even got to record Tyson walking by me.
