You may say that he's unskilled but he beat some very good world class opponents of his day. Even if he didn't do things by the book or look like poetry in motion, doesn't mean that he wasn't skilled.

Because he made obvious, glaring mistakes that would be punished in any era after his own. He fought in the transition between older and modern times and he was pretty crude for both eras. His saving grace was his solid chin and punching power, but even still that would only carry him so far against the best, and the skill sets of the best were improving with each decade by the time he stopped fighting.

This. Baer was actually very skilled, but like any great fighter had styles that he struggled with.

For the same reason people laugh at Wilder today. Minimal skills, one trick ponies in weak eras.

Baers limitations were well known in his time. This has nothing to do with some imagined progression of boxing talent historically. Every era produced great fighters and each would shine in any era.

Max Baer would beat a lot of skilled fighters. Mayweather Jr is much more skilled but Max would kill him in a real fight. And before you say that because he's bigger, if you took an actual unskilled oaf off the street and put him in with Mayweather Jr, what do you think would happen?

Max reminded me of an earlier version of Foreman just not as good.

Because he was extremely crude, for any era. This doesn't stack well for H2H discussions here. And you can't even argue intangibles, since he frequently acted like a clown and flip flopped like a bipolar girlfriend.

    Great power and chin though.

You're right. Baer was a far more formidable fighter than an actual oaf off the street. If that is your frame of reference then yes, he has skills.
