First round is one of the best. After that it's just a good fight. 2&3 aren't close to the best in history. It's overrated imo

I think there have been better short fights (let's say four rounds or less for argument's sake) than The War, but not many - if any at all - better short super fights. It's a fight which transcends the obsessives and hardcore fanbase and is known by a wider audience because of the high profile nature of the two combatants and the sheer buzz which surrounded it at the time. So it's the fight you can sell as the greatest three rounds in history.

If it is overrated, I guess that's why. It's the kind of fight which breaches that audience which might only tune in to one or two fights per year.

339 shots in 8 minutes, half hit the mark, Hagler wounded at round 1, Richard Steele ready to stop the fight...match overrated?

It got a lot of play at the time as an all-time great war because of the fact that you had perhaps the two best fighters in the game going at each other like that. Such things are rarities.

Exciting match, great first round, but ultimately it hasn't aged as well as some would have thought then.

I agree with you. After the 1st rd the fight was pretty much all Hagler. The only drama was would Hagler stop Hearns before the cut he received the 1st rd cause the ref to stop the fight.

It was a great fight. But, it was NID Hagler would win after Tommy landed his best shots and nothing happened to Hagler. When one fighter is a 10 on the resilence scale, and the other is about a 5, and both can punch, you're not going to have a long fight.

Mancini vs Kim was much better IMO.

Not much to add as I agree with most of the above, can't argue with Round 1 being an ATG round, the other 2, no way.

I think it has aged very well. Same as it did then. I just think it has been 34 years and memories fade. Hagler and Hearns are not thought of as much as they used to be because we have had other fighters and eras since. It was a long time ago. As for Hagler/Hearns. Football coaches using it to inspire their teams. The two best fighters in boxing clashing like that. I don't think we have seen that since, and the spirit they showed is what lasts in my memory. Any two fighters fight that sort of first round, you will not get much after that. And if you do, the fighters don't punch too hard. They both landed clean in round one.

I think the fight had everything. For a 3 round fight you had a cut, both guys hurt within the first minute. Hearns broke his hand. Brawl. Hearns tried to box and they still landed in round 2. In round 3 Hagler looked very tired and Hearns looked better landing his jab and boxing, but he was exhausted and Steele threatened to stop the fight. And Hagler ended. The fight had it all. If we are talking rounds 2 and 3 non stop action like round one, no but they had everything. Overrated? I don't see it. It was an intense fight packed into 8 minutes. And Hagler was swelled up a bit on his left side of his face.. With a small cut on his right cheek I seemed to recall. Hearns was not swelled at all. Regardless. The fights stands the test of time.
