Since there are some Floydettes that truly think he is the GOAT I'd say he's overrated AF by them. Most people have him about right.
I mean he has ATG status and deserves a high placement in a P4P list. He is truly one of the best ever.
How can he be overrated when people will genuinely tell you that he beats prime versions of Duran, Hearns, Ray Leonard, Ray Robinson and other greats who I wouldn't fancy him against? Floyd's likely shown the most consistent elite defence on tape, but then I temper it with an acknowledgement of his competition faced, relative to the condition of the fighter at the time of the fight, style, skillset compared to other great defensive fighters - e.g. making Hearns and Duran miss is more impressive than making De La Hoya miss. Making Ray Leonard miss combinations at close range is more impressive than making Canelo miss from the outside and in the pocket. Floyd was an excellently skilled fighter - history and fight fan ignorance to previous fighters will ensure that he is rated very favourably in my opinion.
Shame the opponent wasn't quicker of the mark there...your allowed to rabbit punch them when they do that so it all evens out.
I've seen enough of Duran and Robinson to know that they should be favoured at best weight at their very best over Mayweather - unless you, of course, disagree? Losing to a fighter with immense skill like De Jesus is fine by me - beating him two out of three, being arguably greatest LW in history and then going up, beating Ray, surviving Hagler, beating Moore and Barkley all speak for Duran. Duran's fights against Palomino and the feat in Montreal show me enough in skillset for me to favour him at 147lbs against Floyd and Floyd wouldn't beat Hearns or both Rays at the weight.
Duran’s track record of loses to pure boxer movers and slick fighters makes him a firm underdog against Mayweather, any weight. Benitez is basically a gatekeeper for being considered to have a good chance against Mayweather. In all these years, I’ve still never seen any decent footage of Robinson at 147.
Floyd's biggest struggles were against fighters levels below what a prime Duran that tamed Palomino and Leonard brings to the table. Sure Floyd gives him a better fight at LW, but my supposition is that the fighter who beat Palomino and forced Leonard backwards, trapped him and forced him into a fire fight would be too much for Floyd. There's footage of Ray at WW and one only has to extrapolate from his best MW performances to note that at his height, with his punch power, chin and warrior mentality, SRR isn't a good match up for Floyd, neither is Hearns.
Duran had problems with movers at 154 and higher, when he was mostly unmotivated and inconsistent due to his work ethic, as well as in a weight class he was uncomfortable at. Leonard was incredibly slick himself, yet Duran had him wobbly at round 2 and hurt him multiple times, and Duran has a record at 135 of chasing around movers and knocking them out. If it's at 154 then Floyd has a very reasonable case of beating Duran. But at 147 and below Floyd would be in a world of pain, look at how Maidana managed to get to Floyd by using feints, the jab and body shots, or how Castillo got him to the ropes by pressuring him. What do you think would have happened if that was Duran at 147 or 135 ? Duran is the poster boy for pressure fighters that go to the body, a master feinter with an educated jab and the best infighter ever.
Tony was Never PROVEN to have done anything wrong & has never popped dirty for Ped's. BOTH Floyd & Ginger have . Ginger was proven & "punished" for his popping dirty remember ?? Floyd was caught red handed CHEATING!!!!! Back in your hole troll LOL
No, he is massively overrated. His record isn't overly special. Good enough for him to be top 50, but not top 20. His skills are impressive but he's nowhere near the best ever either. He's only rated as the best or greatest ever by newer fans and contrarians.
I side with the man who doesn’t require excuses. BTW Floyd would have an easier time w Duran at 147 than 135.
