We all know to step in with our jabs and (when opportune) even with our crosses and overhands.

The thing is, I think I learned the wrong way. When I throw a left hook, I get great leverage by doing the pivot, but I started out actually stepping into the punch with my left foot (of course, the power has a lot to do with the back heel for each variation). This can be even more devastating (though it might have to do with the fact that I simply got used to doing it that way).

The same with uppercuts: I can and do use the shoulder-and-hip technique, heels flat; however, I started out (self-taught, I know, I know lol) by stepping up with the same foot with the punch just a bit as I followed through, still driving down hard with the opposite heel.

Of course, recovering one's balance can be very tricky when punching like this, so these days I mostly do it when someone's already at least a little hurt.

I've seen Tyson, Lyle, and Frazier with their kind of leaping left hooks, so I'm positive there's some benefit to this technique (Frazier of course mostly used the classic pivot and look where it got him, amazing fighter).

Just curious what folks here thought about this technique, or if it's generally shunned.
