Does anybody have any exercises that make you feel lighter on your feet? I'm 5'9 185lbs. I do the normal running and skipping rope. I'm confident with almost everything with my boxing, but I feel sluggish on my feet. Any help would be very appreciated.
Jumping rope helps a lot. I used to jump rope in rounds like 3-4 minute rounds and after awhile switch to 30 second breaks, but now I just do 25-30 minutes straight and it was better. Also what helps me is doing those football ladder and cones drills and then sprinting afterward
For light on the feet question - watch yourself in mirror shadowboxing and watch that your heels are up and your body rotation on your punches is correct. Skipping improves calf muscle strength and that is where the bounce in your step comes from.
I've started to realize that lightness on your feet and quick footwork is dependant on above-average calf strength. Work on those calves!
I've got 3 pairs of boots and with 1 pair I feel a lot lighter on my feet and feel a lot more comfortable moving. It may not be the problem, but it may be something worth looking at.
Youtube. There's alot of good info on there. Everyone have a different way of getting light on there feet. I think your on the right track. Jumping rope plyometrics, etc. Like someone else on previously post calf muscles have alot to do with it.
Try to stand a little taller. If you're bending your knees too much your feet will feel heavier and it will effect your mobility. Just figured this out myself and it lets me move so much easier. :happy
shadowboxing using weights, focus lots on keeping your feet moving, just like when you throw punches holding the weights, when you take them away you feel loads faster, sounds easier than it is,keeping your feet moving all the while.
that is a simple and so accurate statement. and the reverse is true too. when it's time to "sit down", bend the knees, lower the hips and think heavy.
i'm a big fan of shadow boxing and foot work drills with ankle weights. they don't have to be heavy. yes, your legs are strong but the position of the weights (at the end of the lever, opposite the hip joint) are way down at the ankle. 2-5lbs and you'll feel a difference. then take them off to spar.
You just need to keep up the skipping and footwork drills, and really focus on not plodding around, it happens when you get heavier but it can be sorted out.
