Why hasn't Sergio Martinez been targeting Bute?

Arum already suggested this to Lou, and Lou said that Bute's too big.

I think bute is high risk low reward for Martinez even if i'd like to see it.

The logical opponent for Martinez is sturm in germany or in the US.

May be Martinez - Abraham at 160 could be another option.

Sturm should come to America if he wants to fight Sergio.

Sturm doesn't want to fight Martinez anywhere. Sturm wants to fight guys like Ronald Hearns or Koji Sato. He only says he wants to "fight the best" because it makes for good quotes before his "exhibition" bouts.

Martinez needs to realize that he is too dangerous for the moneymakers at around 154 lbs and that he himself is not a draw. There's no easy payday in store for him.

There is no way Sergio is only interested in fighting smaller men. I mean come on he took on and defeated Paul Williams and Kelly Pavlik! He just needs to make a big fight soon. I think going up to fight Bute would be a jump too far though. Indeed, Bute will likely end up at 175 in the not too distant future. There are some potential fights at 160 out there, against Chavez Jr., Sturm or Golovkin (which imho would be a good fight), but none of them are big paydays. I really don't see a way out of this jam for Martinez except a fight with Cotto at 154 if he beats Margarito, and then maybe Canelo.

The whole weight thing is a bit of a tangled web. For one, there are welterweights that come in on fight night in the mid 160s, so are they in essence standard middleweights if 170 is considered huge? I think the talk about Martinez being a small middleweight has to do with his dimensions. He's been the shorter fighter in each of the past 3 fights and I believe has given up a reach advantage in each of them.

Citing Pavlik, Taylor, Abraham, and Miranda doesn't really bolster the argument that he should head north to take on the best at 168 as 3 of the 4 fighters listed had significantly less success in the above weight class than they had at middleweight(and at the moment, it's wait and see for Pavlik), some of that is simply everybody at 168 is a lot bigger than the standard middleweight. Bute in the Miranda fight weighed in the 180s on fight night for instance, if Martinez came in around 180 I would render a guess that he would have less quickness, less stamina, and would still be giving up the physical advantages in height and reach, oh and if he was facing Bute or an Andre Ward, those guys are pretty quick at that weight.

Also, the list of fighters you displayed is interesting as a few of them are among the best that ever laced them up. So if he's a fraud, why bother comparing him to such company? Also, a few (but not all) of the fighters were freaking humongous for the weights they started at. Finally, I don't get the Arturo Gatti comment. So Gatti had legit belts in 2 divisions and that's more than we can say for Martinez.....well....that's more than we can say for Pavlik as well. Should we just decide both suck since they haven't won belts in 2 divisions? Fact is, Martinez won the lineal middleweight title when he started his career as a welterweight (having only started boxing at 20).

Personally, I wish the middleweight division wasn't so mediocre. I would like to see Martinez fight Sturm but I don't know how makeable that fight is. Maybe even a fight with Macklin. But overally, the weight classes of 154-160 are pretty poor and I personally don't believe Martinez is big enough for SMW.

Why would he? There are plenty of other fights he can take without going up to 168. Fair play to Abraham for doing so but look at him now. He is now nothing but a piece of meat.

NVM the size difference!!! In our fantasies, we MUST smash the best together! Martinez is an undersized Middleweight. And someone expects him to fight at Supermid? He had fought in Lt Mid and i feel he can trim down to there again, if needed. Thats a ****ing 14lb swing! Thats asking TOO much of a fighter.

Same thing with Martinez vs Pacquiao... Martinez is a sizeable LtMid, IF trimmed down. Pacquiao is a friggin Lightweight, IF trimmed down. Thats still 3 ****ing weightclasses! Whats worse, Martinez is comfortable fighting at Middleweight!

Next in Dickie's fantasyland..... Pacquiao vs Bute
