How long would it take (to train at boxing) and be able to defend yourself?

Yeah, being a badass is all fun and games until you get stabbed. Want to get stabbed over a slice of pizza?

I'm curious as to how often you kick these people's heads in. I feel like what with most people having friends and family, you'd be in trouble by now. Not to mention police not liking trained fighters dishing out redass beatdowns to everyone who pisses them off.

It isn't about doing the right thing in a moral sense, it's about doing the right thing for you. If beating someone up over an insult helps you feel better about yourself in some way, that's probably not a good thing. There's some things that just aren't worth fighting over.

You know what I skipped over an amazing post by Armstrong because of an e-thug so I apologize because it contained more wisdom than all the other shitty "advice" combined.

You're putting words into his mouth probably because you put artificial facts in your head.

It was not over an insult -- read the story, then re-read the story, then print it out and have someone read you the story. If you didn't notice it the first time, you'll see that I wrote that we did ignore it after we were insulted. I reacted ONLY after he approached my friends and I in a demeaning manner and tried to make us to leave.

This is what fascinates about reading some of these holier-than-thou suggestions...because they're incredibly stupid and undoubtedly fantasy suggestions. Like seriously, "buy a gun and place it on a table" or "leave the restaurant because the bad guy told you" is bonkers, it's riduculous, and an insult to your dignity.

Try this experience, go out to every random shop in town and approach a group of strangers, and tell them to "get the **** out" - according to the logic of some of the e-thugs on here, most people should be doing the "right" thing and leave...but let me know how many don't, and stand their ground. Eventually you'll realize that it isn't everyone else who's stupid - but you.

I can almost assure you that if you had just sat there looking at the guy in fake awe at how stupid he was being, there would never have been a fight.

I could see if he became physically threatening (I have no problem with you initiating a fight. It's not generally a good idea to let the other guy initiate it.), but the fact is that that wasn't an unavoidable fight.

You should absolutely not leave just because someone tells you to. Nor should you fight someone just because they call you names and tell you to leave. There's a middle ground.

Wanna hear a cool story? Two guys I know got the **** beat out of them a few years back. (My cousins' cousins on the other side of the family). It's not clear exactly what happened, but they had apparently had some trouble with a guy. The guy's friends (5 or 6 of them) tracked down the older brother and destroyed his face smashing it off a curb. Plastic surgery and all that fun stuff.

His younger brother? They found him as well. Stabbed him in the lung. He spent a good deal of time in the hospital.

I'm not saying this happens all the time or anything, but some people have nothing to lose and will not hesitate to **** you up seriously over very minor things. What chance does your boxing stand when you get jumped from behind by a gang of kids who aren't afraid to kill you?

This is a good reason to not get into fights OR altercations if they can be avoided at all. You go ahead and do what you want. Sorry that we tried to give you some advice to keep you safe.

    This.

The best way to defend oneself is to avoid fights altogether. I've seen it countless times, people who pick up a martial art become testy, thinking they ain't gonna be pushed around no more. But once it's 2-against-1 or worse, you need some serious physical and/or technical advantages over your attackers and once they sport a weapon, you're toast anyway. And just think how undignifying a colostomy bag is.

I'm what's considered middle-class, I've got money, a good job, a good education. My dignity can't be challenged by some thug or wanna-be, I'll gladly walk away every time.

Guys who define themselves through physical dominance, the kind that even if you beat them the first time around, they will track you down or jump you the next time they see you, to me, they are just a couple of steps closer to our primate ancestors than I am.

I'm a civilized man. I want to see lions in a zoo or on safari, not while I'm jogging. I settle my disputes with words or the law, not the fist. And I want my dose of raw manliness in a ring, with gloves and rules, and not in a street fight.

Boxing really isn't made for defending yourself, its a sport. But it will help anyways just like playing football (tackling) or competing in olympic wrestling (grappling) will help in a fight.

Boxing will teach you to fight with your fists only and get you into great shape if you do a proper boxer's training routine. That is probably enough to defend yourself from most idiots but you're kinda ****ed if they pull out a weapon...

When he was younger my old boxing trainer was 40-0 in the mexican ams. He had to quit because he got stabbed in the hand during a fight he got in. You'd think being a great boxer woulda helped him...

Anyways, I'd say it would take 3-4 months of:
    -jogging 3-4 miles a day, 5-6 days a week
-going to the gym and working the bags 5-6 days a week
-doing push-ups and sit-ups immediately after working the bags until you can do at least 30-40 push ups and 50-60 sit ups straight

From there you're ready to begin sparring where you will learn to be able to fight using your fist. If you're not in shape for this you're in for a world of pain lol..

A couple more months of sparring and training and you'll be set. If someone takes your food and throws it on the ground you'll be able to break their nose with a single jab. If they try to fight you with their fists you'll probably kill them when their head hits the floor after you land your bombs. If that happens or they pull out a weapon...well uh...good luck with that...

people are going way over the top about avoiding confrontations altogether. as a man you have to have some self-respect and defend yourself. sometimes you don't have a choice and can't walk away. if a hooligan punches you in the face or harms your family, what will do? avoid the fight and walk away because it's the moral thing to do, or use all your experience in boxing, have some self-respect as a man and show him how good your knuckle game is?

basically, don't trouble trouble until trouble troubles you. and when you're in a situation when you're forced to fight with no other option, you'll know how to. you

    Obviously.

Nobody said walk away from a guy who assaulted yourself or your family, obviously you defend yourself and family. The point is you don't get into a fight over a few words shouted across a room by a couple of children, like in the OP's situation.

I love this thread!:happy I happened to end up in a fight a few weeks back ended up with a broken nose that needs resetting and my friend spent a night in the cells for assault not good and incredibly shameful..... not really sure what happened had far too much to drink. Boxing skills don't count for much when you have too much to drink and someone punches you when your not looking.:patsch

Glad more and more people (who are actually fighters) are coming out and saying how a person would react, as opposed to basement-dwellers who have yet to experience a day outdoors.

Isn't it enough that I made you look like a moron already?

But if you're going to make things up, why not go all the way? Instead of saying "he fought because of a few words shouted across the room" instead of what actually happened, which was someone coming 2 feet from my face and throwing my food on the ground, while standing in a demeaning manner...couldn't you just have said that I started the fight because he put anchovies on his pizza?

Just think about this, your entire existence revolves around arguing on an internet forum and you're too stupid to even do that , I mean, is this it? Is this the purpose of your existence? I mean we have actual fighters with actual experience telling you how things actually happen and you're too dumb to even listen to them LOL
