Why are people so quick to label a fighter's style?

It seems as if people think a fight or two defines a fighter's style and that he always fights that way.

I remember people saying Floyd Mayweather was always a boring runner after the Carlos Baldomir fight, the first boring and real defensive fight he had in years.

Marvin Hagler still gets labeled as a face-first, brawling, pressure fighter despite the fact that he spent most of his career as a boxer-puncher.

Some people appeared to be shocked to see Miguel Cotto use the ring and circle against Shane Mosley, but that wasn't anything new for Cotto either.

Others act like Bernard Hopkins was always someone with a low workrate.

I agree on all of that, especially about Cotto. Im not sure when Cotto got this reputation as a face first brawler, but I never thought that way. I remember when he got tested by N dou in 04, he's never back peddled so much in his life. He was on his bicycles and boxing.

Cotto only looked like a crazy brawler against inferior competition, but when he's matched up evenly, he boxes..

So all this talk of cotto not being afraid to trade is total bull****.

So a lot of guys have a preference that they move into early in the fight---given that their apponents style allows that they do this--otherwise its plan B or C -& just hangin in there to survive if things go pearshaped :smoke

I agree EB. I admit I was surprised at Cotto's boxing skill but that was only because I didn't think he could outbox Shane. I knew he had some pure boxing skill but he was masterful with some of the **** he did against Shane. That jab was ridiculous!

Cotto will initiate a slugfest when he feels he has the upper hand & like any sensible boxer he will impose his will as long as allowed to--if things get too tough he'lle box his way out of the situation --regroup and rethink his next strategy----nothing new PBF does it --only not frequently enough for some...:smoke :smoke
