Jeff I think you got a fine list there! Kat and Cotto would be on the cusp for me as well. I would Pass on great fighters onto the next generation, Pac, JMM, Mayweather are definatly on that list. Sergio, Gambao, Kahn, and Bute also have the chance at making the cut. I remember Gatti for the great fights he was in not for being a great boxer! for that matter Oscar, SSM are borderline as well. There are countless from years past you have forgotten ie Duran. In hind sight this is not a very easy task . . . lol . . . but interesting topic

 

AGREED! If you want some to like boxing I would never show them any heavyweight boxing from atleast the last decade! The heavyweight division is dead!!

 

I'll tell them about Martinez because of his story. It can show them that they're never too old to start boxing.

 

Hoping to steer my son into boxing, I'd love the kind of relationship where I can sit and watch old fights and dissect the boxers with him.

I'd like to show him :

Hopkins : To show the advantages of flawless textbook boxing, along with old style tricks that no present boxer has in his locker.

RJJ : Best of my generation, broke all the rules, and got away with it. Really was just a phenomenon.

Barrera : I'd just like to sit and compare him from his early brawler days, to the seasoned boxer puncher that he became.

Morales : Just because I was/am a massive fan of El Terrible

FMJ : I really think we've been treated to something special, Hopkins skill with Jones athletic talent, he should maybe of accomplished so much more, but the defence is amazing.

Gatti : Determination personified.

JMM : Pinpoint punch accuracy, every punch has a purpose.

And an honourable mention to Paulie Mallignagi : He knows he won't knock someone out, so to have gotten as far as he has purely on boxing skill (including various hand breakages during a fight) deserves respect from me.

 

Good list, I'd add Sergio, pwill, Mosley ( pre grandpa era ) and Donaire. Don't even think of ward though. If ur goal is to put ur kid to sleep and guarantee that he'll never watch another boxing match as long as he lives, then ward would be an excellent choice.

 

I would definitely tell them about BHOP to show them that it is possible to make something out of nothing and the importance of discipline

In answer to the thread, for me it would be Marquez, Mayorga, Hopkins, Izzy & Rafa, and Pacquaio.
